Just weeks after its landmark approval in the region, the company has announced that it is ending one-time Full Self-Driving (FSD) purchases in the Netherlands. According to a notice on Tesla’s Dutch vehicle configurator, the option to buy the software outright for €7,500 will disappear on May 15, 2026.

The move was recently highlighted on X by Tesla watcher @SawyerMerritt, who noted, “Y’all have two weeks to buy FSD outright for €7,500 before it’s gone forever.” This rapid shift comes only a month after Tesla started rolling out FSD (Supervised) to its first public testers in the Netherlands following official regulatory approval in the country.

                                        The Subscription-Only Playbook

This isn’t Tesla’s first time axing the “buy it now” button for its self-driving features. Earlier this year, the company discontinued outright FSD purchases in North America to move toward a subscription-only model. The goal is simple: recurring revenue. Tesla has already surpassed $500 million in annual recurring revenue from FSD subscriptions, a number that is only expected to climb as more markets join the fold.

While Dutch owners will soon lose the permanent purchase option, Tesla has been trying to entice them with free trials since the initial launch. After the May 15 deadline, the €99 monthly subscription will be the only way for new and existing Tesla owners in the Netherlands to experience the software. This appears to be the standard global playbook now — new markets get a brief window to purchase the package before the subscription model becomes the exclusive access point.

One-Time FSD Purchases in the Netherlands

                                        FSD with a European Flavor

For those in the Netherlands who do hop on the wagon, the experience is a bit different than what we see in the U.S. There are several new features and UI changes exclusive to the European version of the system. Additionally, European regulations are much stricter regarding safety. To even enable the feature, owners must first watch a dedicated tutorial video and solve a short quiz to prove they understand how the supervised system works.

The focus on the Netherlands is no accident. Much of the EU looks toward the Dutch RDW as a leader in automotive regulation. As Tesla leadership has noted, this landmark approval is expected to create a domino effect, paving the way for FSD to reach the rest of the bloc and potentially fueling a full global expansion.

A Move to Cement Loyalty

By forcing the subscription model, Tesla is betting that the lower entry price of €99 per month will attract a much larger pool of users than a €7,500 upfront cost. It also allows Tesla to keep owners in its ecosystem longer, as the revenue continues to flow month after month.

If you’ve been considering the one-time purchase in the Netherlands, the clock is officially ticking. After May 15, the “ownership” era of FSD ends in the country, replaced by the same recurring model that is quickly becoming the norm for Tesla’s AI-powered future.

Tesla is wasting no time bringing its latest business strategy to the European market.
