DETROIT\u2014Stellantis is deploying firearm-sniffing dogs at several U.S. assembly plants.<\/p>\n

The dogs have already been working without issue for months at the Sterling Heights Assembly Plant in Michigan, where the Ram 1500 pickup is made. They are next headed to the Detroit Assembly Complex\u2019s Mack plant<\/a>, where the Jeep Grand Cherokee is built.<\/p>\n

The dogs and their handlers are there to \u201csupport workplace safety and employee well-being,\u201d according to a statement from the automaker, and were picked for their ability to work comfortably in a manufacturing environment.<\/p>\n

Other major Stellantis<\/a> plants are expecting to soon have K-9 units patrolling entrances, factory floors and parking lots.<\/p>\n

Stellantis<\/a> began using the K-9 units last fall from Michigan firm Zebra K9 as part of a pilot program at the massive Sterling Heights plant. The dogs are certified to detect firearms and explosives.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Stellantis<\/a> states the move was not a reaction to any specific concerns or threats. Last summer, however, the plant had been evacuated after a Stellantis employee brought a handgun into the plant, barricaded himself and had a three-hour standoff with police. No one was injured.<\/p>\n

Two dogs have regularly patrolled both the factory floor and parking lots since October.<\/p>\n
