At the Port of Rotterdam, Europe\u2019s largest seaport, keeping freight and passengers moving requires a rail network that\u2019s resilient, efficient and ready for the future. Through the Infra op Orde programme, VolkerRail, part of the VolkerWessels group, is delivering critical upgrades to this infrastructure across multiple locations. With shifting sites, personnel, and complex requirements, the team needed a structured approach to communication and issue management.<\/p>\n

Autodesk Construction Cloud (ACC) became the digital backbone of the project. Using the Issues module as a central coordination tool, VolkerRail created a consistent, transparent process for flagging, managing, and resolving issues across disciplines and project phases. \u201cWe\u2019re working across different sites for years at a time,\u201d explains Enrico Lussi, Rail Designer at VolkerRail. \u201cThat makes it essential to store everything in one place and keep track of every detail.\u201d<\/p>\n

Clarity at scale<\/p>\n

In earlier projects, issue management often depended on emails, messaging apps, and unstructured documents, making it difficult to maintain oversight. On Infra op Orde, that changed. The Issues module provided a shared environment for tracking and reporting, reducing time spent locating information and enabling faster resolution. VolkerRail has since cut reporting effort by up to 80% and improved issue turnaround times by 60%, based on internal benchmarks.<\/p>\n

\u201cBeforehand, a project controller would spend an entire day searching through emails and messages,\u201d says Enrico. \u201cNow it takes a few clicks to generate an up-to-date issues report.\u201d<\/p>\n

This level of clarity has been particularly valuable on a programme of such scale. By linking issues directly to specific models or drawings, teams across design, construction, and operations can review status and act with confidence. The ability to collaborate in real time \u2013 whether from the office or onsite \u2013 has helped reduce delays and create alignment across teams and contractors.<\/p>\n

Standardising digital delivery<\/p>\n

VolkerRail\u2019s work on Infra op Orde also reflects a wider shift across the VolkerWessels group toward consistent, digital-first workflows. With infrastructure projects growing in complexity and pressure mounting to retain expertise as the workforce evolves, standardised tooling helps ensure resilience.<\/p>\n

\u201cWorking in a standardised way across our companies allows us to capture the benefits of digital tools more fully,\u201d says Tobias Goedhals, Corporate Development Programme Manager at VolkerWessels. \u201cACC gives us one environment to coordinate our work, share data and create transparency for both internal teams and clients.\u201d<\/p>\n

Digital tools are also increasingly critical to demonstrating compliance and quality. With clients demanding more visibility into how work is delivered, platforms like ACC provide an auditable record \u2013 enabling teams to share clear, verifiable evidence of progress and performance.<\/p>\n

A more resilient model for infrastructure<\/p>\n

Through its work on Infra op Orde, VolkerRail has shown how integrated digital workflows can improve delivery and reduce risk on complex rail projects. By embedding the Autodesk Construction Cloud platform \u2013 and the Issues module in particular \u2013 into their daily operations, the team has built a scalable foundation for collaboration and continuous improvement.<\/p>\n
