Queen Camilla arrives at NYPL

Queen Camilla has arrived at the New York Public Library, where she will be promoting her charity, the Queen’s Reading Room.

The library houses the teddy bears that once inspired A A Milne to write the “Winnie-the-Pooh” books. Among the collection are a carefully preserved Kanga, Piglet, Eeyore, Tigger and Pooh.

Missing from the collection is Kanga’s baby, Roo, who was lost in the 1930s.

Queen Camilla arrived with a gift: A replica of Roo made by British teddy bear makers Merrythought, who produced the original stuffed animals.

The bears once belonged to Christopher Robin, the song of Milne, and are believed to be the inspiration behind the beloved books.

President Trump asked about King Charles’ comments in support of NATO, Ukraine

President Donald Trump was asked about remarks King Charles made about NATO and Ukraine during his speech to Congress on Tuesday.

During his address, King Charles defended the role of NATO following criticism from Trump that the alliance was not being supportive enough of his war against Iran.

At the start of his speech, Charles said: “We meet in times of great uncertainty, in times of conflict from Europe to the Middle East which pose immense challenges for the international community and whose impact is felt in communities the length and breadth of our own countries.”

“From the depths of the Atlantic to the disastrously melting ice-caps of the Arctic, the commitment and expertise of the United States Armed Forces and its allies lie at the heart of NATO, pledged to each other’s defence, protecting our citizens and interests, keeping North Americans and Europeans safe from our common adversaries,” he said.

King Charles looked to the 25th anniversary of 9/11, noting that it was the first time NATO invoked Article 5, and the United Nations Security Council put on a united front.

“We answered the call together – as our people have done so for more than a century, shoulder to shoulder, through two World Wars, the Cold War, Afghanistan and moments that have defined our shared security,” he said. “Today, Mr Speaker, that same, unyielding resolve is needed for the defence of Ukraine and her most courageous people.

“It is needed in order to secure a truly just and lasting peace.”

On Wednesday, Trump was asked by a reporter if King Charles’ remarks had changed his line of thinking.

“I was very disappointed with the fact that when we called on them to give us a little hand, we didn’t need it. I actually did it just to see whether or not they’d be there when we called on NATO to give us a hand with Ukraine, and in particular…we asked them to do certain things on Ukraine, and we also wanted them to do things with Iran. And in Ukraine, they’re very much involved but they didn’t do things the way we would like to, and…it’s been going on for a long time in Iran,” he said.

Trump continued:They weren’t there as you know. And they weren’t there, as you know, you know it better than anybody. They weren’t there. The King is fantastic. We spent a lot of time together. We had a lot of talk. We talked about this also, and he loves his country, and he’s a great king, and he’s a great friend of mine. And I think if he were doing that, if that were up to him, he would have probably helped us with Iran. He would have followed the suggestions we made with respect to Ukraine, because, you know, we have some disagreements on Ukraine, not having to do with NATO so much as European countries.”

“But no, he, he, you know, he’s coming back tomorrow. We had an incredible evening last night, and he’s leaving tomorrow. He’s going to come back and see us before he leaves. And, you know, I think he’s a phenomenal representative for his country. I think the people in the United Kingdom should be proud. I loved his speech yesterday. I watched it. I loved the speech last night. I don’t know about my speech. I thought my speech was okay, too, but I thought he was. I think he’s an unbelievable King, and, by the way, an unbelievable queen. They are a great couple,” Trump said.

While Winnie, Tigger, Piglet, Kanga and Eeyore are all on display, the original baby kangaroo toy, Roo, was lost in an apple orchard in the 1930s.

The Roo toy was made specifically for the visit by traditional British teddy bear makers Merrythought, who produced the original toys.

It was not immediately clear what Mamdani and the royal discussed.

Mamdani had said earlier Wednesday that he would urge King Charles to return a crown jewel to India if the two were able to chat privately.

“If I were to speak to the king separately from that, I’d probably encourage him to return the Kohinoor diamond,” Mamdani said at a press conference before the 9/11 ceremony.

The Kohinoor diamond, a point of contention between England and India, is currently set into a royal crown on display in the Tower of London.
