Moore won the November 2022 election by almost 650,000 votes at 64.5% of the vote to Cox’s 32.1%.On the other side of the political spectrum was Hale, a retired banking executive who owns the Baltimore Blast soccer team and switched from the Democratic Party to the Republican Party for this race.Cox calls himself a true conservative and a “proven leader,” who seeks to end residential property taxes, eliminate retirement taxes, reduce the cost of living and “fix the energy crisis.”Hale switched from the Democratic Party last summer to run in this year’s Republican Primary race, telling GOP voters that he’s their best chance to oust Moore in November. Hale, who owns the Baltimore Blast and is a former CEO of First Mariner Bank, wants to eliminate automatic increases to the state’s gas tax that are tied to inflation, as well as expand the use of fossil fuels and nuclear energy, end vehicle emissions testing and begin offering trade certificates at state universities.While Democrats outnumber Republicans by more than 2-to-1 in Maryland, Republicans are no stranger to the C-suite at the State House. Moore succeeded then-Gov. Larry Hogan, who was Maryland’s first Republican governor to win a second term since 1954.
