A man accused of stabbing his father to death at a playground in Wellesley, Massachusetts, was held without bail during his arraignment Friday.James Floyd Bennett, III, 24, of Wellesley, allegedly stabbed his 58-year-old father, James Bennett, at Phillips Park just after 6 p.m. Thursday. Witnesses told NewsCenter 5 that they saw the incident that happened near a slide on the playground. “There was a man in a pink shirt, and he stabbed someone,” Christine Meyer said. “I only know that he ran in that direction — kind of hard to hide on Brook Path.” Prosecutors said after the stabbing, the suspect returned to his home, where he showered and put his clothes and the knife into a garbage bag. They said he took a photo of himself before surrendering to Wellesley police. Defense attorney Bill Crowe said his client has a “significant mental health history.””They are going through a very tragic event. They have lost two family members. The family loves the fellow that was just charged in there, James III, also known as Tripp,” a family spokesperson said. “They are fully supportive of him. They feel terrible about what’s happened.”Phillips Park is a popular spot for families, joggers and dog walkers, and the stabbing has left neighbors shaken by the violence.”It is shocking,” neighbor Joe Levanto said. “We’ve never had anything like this in our neighborhood before. It’s a really sad situation.” Massachusetts State Police troopers, along with Wellesley police, are investigating the stabbing. The defendant is scheduled to return to court on July 10 for a probable cause hearing.
