PROSPECT HILL, N.C. (WBTV) – A mass shooting reportedly left multiple people dead in rural North Carolina on Wednesday morning.
The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation said the shooting happened around 8:30 a.m. on Aug. 5, at a house along Brooks Road in the Prospect Hill area of Caswell County.
State investigators said in a news release that deputies with the Caswell County Sheriff’s Office found multiple people shot once they made it to the house. One of those people was taken to the Duke University Hospital in Durham, while multiple others died.
Their release did not say exactly how many people were killed.
Authorities had not publicly said what led up to the shooting as of this writing, but state investigators said they were collecting evidence and interviewing people.
While officials did not immediately make the shooter’s status clear, investigators said there was no threat to the general public.

Caswell County is on the North Carolina-Virginia line. The area where the shooting happened is about 40 minutes northwest of Durham.
