Man, 21, dies after falling into Mass. quarry
WESTFORD, Mass. —
A 21-year-old man died early Saturday morning after falling into a quarry in Westford, Massachusetts, the town’s police department announced.
Westford police and fire responded to Merrill’s Quarry, just off Tyngsboro Road, after a caller reported seeing a man fall into the body of water.
The caller said they could no longer see the victim in the water.
Police later found the man face down in the water. He was taken to Lowell General Hospital where he was pronounced dead.
Westford police say the victim died from injuries sustained in the fall and from being in the water for an extended period of time.
Mark and Kathy Bruno live near the quarry and said they have encountered countless young people coming to them for help with injuries from swimming in the quarry.
“It is not a safe place, and we have been saying it for years and years and years,” said Kathy Bruno. “It would be great if the town of Westford finally acted and did something.”
“If you can minimize the number of kids that go up there, you’re going to minimize the number of people who get hurt and you’re going to minimize the death,” said Mark Bruno. “Young children have lost their lives because it doesn’t seem like anyone wants to take the next step to figure out how do we solve this problem, but I think it’s solvable.”
The victim’s identity has not been released.
The incident comes just weeks after a Boston teenager drowned at a quarry in Milford.
