‘Jolene’ surges after Dolly Parton’s death as fans stream her biggest hits

Music fans are rushing to stream Dolly Parton’s extensive catalog following the announcement of her death earlier this week, according to data on Spotify Charts.
The Get the Facts Data team examined Spotify Chart data of daily top songs in the U.S. in the days after news of Dolly Parton’s death was announced on Aug. 25 and found an increase in streams of her greatest hits such as “Jolene,” “9 to 5” and “Islands in the Stream”.
“Jolene” was the second most played track across the U.S. on Aug. 25 with 1.29 million streams. This was followed by “9 to 5,” which was number 3 that same day with 1.13 million streams.
Dolly Parton’s music dominated the list of most streamed songs in the U.S. on Aug. 26.
“Jolene” later rose to the top spot on Spotify on Aug. 26 with 2.03 million streams. “I Will Always Love You” and “Coat of Many Colors” also reached the top 10, ranking 6 and 7 respectively.
Other songs by Dolly Parton also saw a spike in streams on Aug. 25, including recent song covers and collaborations.
The Get the Facts Data Team examined Spotify streaming data on the analytics tool MyStreamCount of 30 of Dolly Parton’s greatest hits and found a 3,021% spike in streams overall.
The list includes recent collaborations with Miley Cyrus, Sabrina Carpenter and Brad Paisley.
Which city had ‘Jolene’ at the top of their Spotify list?
“Jolene” is the one Dolly Parton song that has consistently been on every U.S. city’s top song list for the week of Aug. 21 to 27, according to data from Spotify Charts Weekly Top Songs. But no city has shown the song more love than Nashville.
Dolly Parton’s home base of Nashville, Tennessee, had “Jolene” as its No. 2 streamed song on Spotify from Aug. 21 to 27.
This was followed by New Orleans and Portland, which had “Jolene” as its No. 3 streamed song on Spotify for the week. Denver and Memphis had the song as their No 4 and 5, respectively.
