County sheriff&#8217;s deputy dies during Baker to Vegas relay race"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>A Los Angeles County sheriff\u2019s deputy died after suffering a medical emergency during the Baker to Vegas Challenge Cup Relay, the department announced early Sunday.<\/p>\n<p>Levi Vargas, a 30-year-old San Dimas sheriff\u2019s deputy, was among numerous law enforcement personnel representing their agencies at the annual footrace when the medical emergency occurred, the department <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/LASDHQ\/status\/2038178144709140949\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">wrote in a statement on X<\/a>. Despite receiving medical care, Vargas, an 11-year veteran of the department, died from his injuries. <\/p>\n<p>            <img class=\"image\" alt=\"The Los Angeles County Sheriff\u2019s Department mourns the loss of Deputy Levi Vargas, who passed away on Saturday.\"   width=\"1200\" height=\"1208\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/1774871411_776_.jpeg\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\"\/>         <\/p>\n<p>Deputy Levi Vargas, who died during the desert race, was assigned to the San Dimas Sheriff\u2019s Station.<\/p>\n<p>(Los Angeles County Sheriff\u2019s Department )<\/p>\n<p>Vargas joined the department in 2015 as a custody assistant and later graduated from Academy Class 413, officials said. He is survived by his wife, parents, siblings and extended family.<\/p>\n<p>Department officials said they were \u201cshocked and deeply saddened by the tragic loss.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe was known among his colleagues and friends for his professionalism, commitment, and compassion to our communities,\u201d  they said in a statement. \u201cHis loss is deeply felt across our Department, and he will be greatly missed.<\/p>\n<p> \u201cOur thoughts and prayers are with his family, friends, and colleagues during this incredibly difficult time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For Los Angeles law enforcement, the Baker to Vegas race is the <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/california\/story\/2025-05-11\/fear-and-loathing-from-baker-to-vegas\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">premier <\/a><a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/california\/story\/2025-05-11\/fear-and-loathing-from-baker-to-vegas\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">sporting event of the year.<\/a> Police departments and sheriff\u2019s stations spend months raising the thousands of dollars it takes to send each 20-runner team to the race.
