{"id":17025,"date":"2026-04-15T13:48:08","date_gmt":"2026-04-15T13:48:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/news\/17025\/"},"modified":"2026-04-15T13:48:08","modified_gmt":"2026-04-15T13:48:08","slug":"mediators-move-closer-to-extending-us-iran-ceasefire","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/news\/17025\/","title":{"rendered":"Mediators move closer to extending US-Iran ceasefire"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>CAIRO (AP) \u2014 Mediators moved closer Wednesday to extending the <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/iran-us-israel-trump-lebanon-april-7-2026-421ee64fdc9a5c26460df8119c7d1b3f\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">ceasefire<\/a> between the United States and Iran and restarting negotiations to salvage the fragile truce before it expires next week. A senior Iranian military official threatened to halt trade in the region if the U.S. does not lift its naval blockade.<\/p>\n<p>The <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/iran-war-strait-of-hormuz-blockade-trump-bf6a057faebfc11eb0c76510a4fc20b1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">U.S. blockade on Iranian ports<\/a> and renewed Iranian threats have imperiled the week-old agreement, but regional officials said they were making progress, telling The Associated Press that the United States and Iran had an \u201cin principle agreement\u201d to extend it to allow for more diplomacy.<\/p>\n<p>A senior U.S. official said the United States has not formally agreed to extend the ceasefire and that \u201cengagement\u201d with Iran continues. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to publicly discuss the sensitive negotiations.<\/p>\n<p>The commander of Iran\u2019s joint military command warned that Iran would completely block exports and imports across the Persian Gulf region, the Sea of Oman and the Red Sea if the U.S. military does not lift its blockade on Iranian ports.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIran will act with strength to defend its national sovereignty and its interests,\u201d Ali Abdollahi said.<\/p>\n<p>Mediators seek compromise on sticking points<\/p>\n<p>Before the two-week ceasefire expires on April 22, mediators are pushing for a compromise on three main sticking points that derailed direct talks last weekend \u2014 Iran\u2019s nuclear program, the Strait of Hormuz and compensation for wartime damages, according to a regional official who spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss the mediation efforts.<\/p>\n<p>Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmail Baghaei said Iran is open to discussing the type and level of its uranium enrichment, but his country \u201cbased on its needs, must be able to continue enrichment,\u201d Iran\u2019s state-media reported.<\/p>\n<p>The fighting has killed at least 3,000 people in Iran, more than 2,100 in Lebanon, 23 in Israel and more than a dozen in Gulf Arab states. Thirteen U.S. service members have also been killed.<\/p>\n<p>Future of ceasefire is uncertain<\/p>\n<p>The war, now in its seventh week, has <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/stocks-oil-bonds-iran-war-gasoline-72cc1c65d842ded41d20f3be48a2acd3\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">jolted markets and rattled the global economy<\/a> as shipping has been cut off and airstrikes have torn through military and civilian <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/iran-iraq-us-israel-trump-march-18-2026-d7ca062ba1bf99d1f8dc00c8073cf10f\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">infrastructure across the region<\/a>. <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/stock-markets-trump-oil-iran-war-7659569791b1f5e108489360d18e50f1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Oil prices fell<\/a> on hopes for an end to fighting on Wednesday, and U.S. stocks surged close to records set in January.<\/p>\n<p>Yet the future of the fragile ceasefire appeared increasingly uncertain as the U.S. pressed ahead with its blockade, which threatens to sever Iran from economic lifelines it has relied on since the war began nearly seven weeks ago.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think they want to make a deal very badly,\u201d Trump said in an excerpt from an interview with Fox Business Network\u2019s \u201cMornings with Maria\u201d scheduled to air Wednesday morning. He added: \u201cI view it as very close to over.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>Muhammad Aurangzeb, Pakistan\u2019s finance minister, told AP that \u201cour leadership is not giving up\u201d on efforts to help the U.S. and Iran end the conflict.<\/p>\n<p>Trump claimed Wednesday that China has agreed not to provide weapons to Iran as reports circulated that Beijing has considered transferring arms.<\/p>\n<p>Trump wrote in a social media post that China is \u201cvery happy that I am permanently opening the Strait of Hormuz.\u201d He added: \u201cThey have agreed not to send weapons to Iran.\u201d He seemed to suggest the two are linked.<\/p>\n<p>China has long supported Iran\u2019s ballistic missile program and backed it with dual-use industrial components that can be used for missile production, according to the U.S. government.<\/p>\n<p>US military says no ships got past blockade<\/p>\n<p>U.S. Central Command said Tuesday that no ships made it past the blockade in the first 24 hours, while six merchant vessels complied with direction from U.S. forces to turn around and reenter Iranian waters.<\/p>\n<p>The blockade is intended to pressure Iran, which has <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/ships-iran-oil-china-us-trump-hormuz-82a9acb473837f1bf7a821d0c3f95205\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">exported millions of barrels of oil<\/a>, mostly to Asia, since the war began Feb. 28. Much of it has likely been carried by so-called dark transits that evade sanctions and oversight, providing cash that\u2019s been vital to keeping Iran running.<\/p>\n<p>Since the war began, Iran has curtailed maritime traffic, with most commercial vessels avoiding the waterway. Tehran\u2019s effective <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/the-worlds-most-important-21-miles-0000019d2fbfd29daffdefffc72e0000\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">closure of the strait<\/a>, through which a fifth of global oil transits in peacetime, has sent oil prices skyrocketing, pushing up the cost of gasoline, food and other basic goods far beyond the Middle East.<\/p>\n<p>Strikes continue in Lebanon after Washington talks<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, Israel pressed ahead with its aerial and ground war in Lebanon. The country\u2019s National News Agency reported airstrikes and artillery shelling throughout southern Lebanon on Wednesday, including near Bint Jbeil, where Israeli forces have encircled fighters with the Lebanese militant group Hezbollah.<\/p>\n<p>The fighting continued after Israeli and Lebanese officials concluded their <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/lebanon-israel-us-war-hezbollah-negotiations-28b207b800de1804d8c2ab5242237542\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">first direct talks<\/a> in decades.<\/p>\n<p>Israeli Ambassador Yechiel Leiter said the two countries are \u201con the same side of the equation\u201d in \u201cliberating Lebanon\u201d from Hezbollah. Lebanese Ambassador Nada Hamadeh Moawad called Tuesday\u2019s meeting \u201cconstructive\u201d but urged an end to the fighting.
