{"id":21818,"date":"2026-04-28T18:38:20","date_gmt":"2026-04-28T18:38:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/news\/21818\/"},"modified":"2026-04-28T18:38:20","modified_gmt":"2026-04-28T18:38:20","slug":"months-after-operation-metro-surge-federal-agents-return-to-minneapolis-to-target-daycares-for-suspected-fraud","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/news\/21818\/","title":{"rendered":"Months after Operation Metro Surge, federal agents return to Minneapolis to target daycares for suspected fraud"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Teams of federal agents once again swarmed sections of Minneapolis early Tuesday morning, multiple officials confirmed to CBS News, exercising search warrants at about 20 childcare centers for suspected fraud.<\/p>\n<p>No one was arrested in the raids \u2014 a stark contrast from last winter&#8217;s immigration crackdown during\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/minnesota\/news\/ice-arrests-minneapolis-killings-leadership-shakeup\/\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Operation Metro Surge<\/a>\u00a0\u2014 but the sweeping law enforcement activity did appear to signal a refocused effort on the part of federal authorities to investigate the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/minnesota-fraud-schemes-what-we-know\/\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">billion-dollar COVID-era fraud schemes in Minnesota<\/a>\u00a0that had once drawn the Trump administration&#8217;s attention and ire.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Today the FBI with federal, state and local law enforcement is involved in court-authorized law enforcement activity as part of an ongoing fraud investigation,&#8221; a Justice Department spokesperson said in a statement Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;If you commit fraud in Minnesota you&#8217;re going to get caught \u2014 and that&#8217;s exactly what we saw today,&#8221; Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, a Democrat, said in a statement. &#8220;We catch criminals when state and federal agencies share information. Joint investigations work, and securing justice depends on it.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Since 2021, 92 people have been charged in the schemes, with 67 convicted, including five people who pleaded guilty last month for their roles in the Feeding Our Future scandal that exploited a federal nutrition program. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I am proud of our team of prosecutors, federal agents, and law enforcement partners who continue to expose the rampant fraud in Minnesota,&#8221; U.S. Attorney Daniel N. Rosen said on March 20.<\/p>\n<p>Rosen declined comment on Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>A CBS News Minnesota crew witnessed about a dozen agents operating at the Mini Childcare Center in South Minneapolis just after 6 a.m. local time. One agent was taking photos while another was seen walking a large portable file case inside.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Mini Childcare Center, notably, was mentioned in a viral social media video posted last December by YouTuber Nick Shirley, who went door to door to about a dozen Somali-owned daycares and health clinics. That video was amplified by Elon Musk, Vice President J.D. Vance and then-Attorney General Pam Bondi, who\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/minnesota-fraud-nick-shirley-video-day-care-investigation\/\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">pushed the fraud story<\/a>\u00a0into the center of the national conversation.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>President Trump and other Republican lawmakers further focused that attention on the state&#8217;s large Somali community, as most of the fraud defendants are of Somali descent, drawing\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/minnesota\/news\/minnesota-leaders-address-trump-attacks-on-somali-community\/\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">stiff criticism from local officials,<\/a>\u00a0including Walz, who denounced Mr. Trump&#8217;s criticism as &#8220;vile, racist lies and slander towards our fellow Minnesotans.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Still, Walz was increasingly put on the defensive, and even\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/minnesota\/news\/tim-walz-drop-out-of-gubernatorial-race-2026\/\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">ended his reelection campaign<\/a>\u00a0on Jan. 5, while also announcing the appointment of a &#8220;fraud czar&#8221; to protect taxpayer-funded social programs.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The ensuing weeks changed the entire dynamic, however, with more than 2,000 federal agents from Customs and Border Protection (CBP) and Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) descending on the Twin Cities, igniting fierce clashes with protesters and resulting in the shooting deaths of two Americans, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/minnesota\/news\/ice-shooting-minneapolis-retired-agent-video-analysis\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Renee Good<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/alex-pretti-shooting-contrast-official-accounts-videos\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Alex Pretti<\/a>.
