(WILX) &#8211; Michigan State University police officials say a suspect is facing felony charges, including allegedly running a meth lab, after an investigation that led to the evacuation of Wells Hall earlier this week.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">The largest academic building on campus was <a href=\"\" rel=\"\" title=\"\">evacuated Monday due to what university officials called the \u201cpresence of an unidentified chemical.\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">On Wednesday evening MSU Department of Police and Public Safety Chief Mike Yankowski said 31-year-old Xin Tong has been charged with malicious destruction of a building over $20,000 and felony controlled substance-operate\/maintain lab involving methamphetamine.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">Tong\u2019s charges stem from a trespassing complaint at Wells Hall Sunday night. He was arraigned Wednesday evening and remains held on $500,000 bond.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">Authorities have not said whether Tong has any affiliation with MSU.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"figure-img img-fluid mx-auto d-block\" alt=\"Mugshot of Xin Tong, the man charged with operating meth lab after investigation at MSU's...\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/2BZQ5MDC2ZFLPAVANJQFSZ3Z34.png\" width=\"980\" height=\"546\" \/>Mugshot of Xin Tong, the man charged with operating meth lab after investigation at MSU&#8217;s Wells Hall(Ingham County Sheriff&#8217;s Office)<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">Yankowski said the department responded to reports of property damage in the building that were \u201cdirectly related\u202fto alleged criminal activity.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">\u201cDue to the fact that this is an open and active investigation, we are limited in the information we can share,\u201d Yankowski said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">Yankowski said DPPS\u202fidentified\u202fa suspect connected to these incidents.\u202fMSU police officers made contact with the suspect inside Wells Hall on\u202fSunday and\u202f\u201dultimately identified\u202fmultiple substances that can be legally\u202fpurchased\u202fin retail stores or online.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">\u201cThe chemicals include sodium hydroxide pellets, hydrochloric acid,\u202fmethanol, isopropyl alcohol, acetone, and butane. Multiple tests performed by the Office of Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) confirm the environment in Wells Hall does not pose a risk to our community,\u201d a release from MSU DPPS said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">During a press conference Wednesday night, Yankowski said the suspect had those chemicals \u201con his person,\u201d but he could not say whether the instruments to create or operate a meth lab were found inside the building because of the ongoing investigation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">RELATED: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wilx.com\/2026\/04\/27\/msus-wells-hall-evacuated-due-presence-unidentified-chemical\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.wilx.com\/2026\/04\/27\/msus-wells-hall-evacuated-due-presence-unidentified-chemical\/\">MSU\u2019s Wells Hall to be closed all week after Monday evacuation due to \u2018presence of unidentified chemical\u2019<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">\u201cThe information that we presented to the Ingham County prosecutor\u2019s office was for destruction of property, damage that was done to flooring, doors, fixtures, inside the facility, and then the component, the substances that he had on his possession, when we made contact with him,\u201d Yankowski said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">Authorities say there \u201ccontinues to be no risk to our campus community and your safety remains our top priority.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">School officials had originally planned to reopen Wells Hall on Tuesday, but \u201cthe decision was made to keep the building closed, relocate exams, and\u202fprovide ample time to allow DPPS to\u202fgather\u202fevidence, EHS to\u202finspect\u202fthe building, clean and assess damage to\u202fflooring, fixtures and other surfaces, and work with Infrastructure Planning and Facilities (IPF) to remediate and ultimately restore the impacted spaces.\u202f\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">Watch Yankowski\u2019s full press conference:<\/p>\n<p class=\"correction | article-correction\">clarification: This story initially reported Tong was charged with running a meth lab inside Wells Hall. Yankowski said during the press conference that authorities could not confirm whether a lab was found in the building, but he did say those materials were found in his possession.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">This is a developing story.
