Iran is reportedly considering using dolphins armed with mines to launch kamikaze attacks on US warships in the Strait of Hormuz<\/a>, which has been under a financially crippling military blockade<\/a> for weeks.<\/p>\n

While the tense extended cease-fire with the US<\/a> holds, a growing number of Iranian hardliners believe that the financial crisis sparked by the US blocking Iran\u2019s oil exports<\/a> amounts to an act of war<\/a> and have called for resuming military action.<\/p>\n

That military action could include unleashing previously unused weapons to attack US warships deployed in the region \u2014 including mine-carrying dolphins, according to Iranian officials, the Wall Street Journal reported<\/a>.<\/p>\n

It wouldn\u2019t be the first time the regime has considered deploying kamikaze dolphins.<\/p>\n

Iran bought dolphins trained to kill for the Soviet navy in 2000, the BBC reported at the time<\/a>. <\/p>\n

The animals were trained to attack the Islamic Republic\u2019s enemies with harpoons attached to their backs, the outlet reported.<\/p>\n

They were also trained to undertake kamikaze strikes against enemy ships by carrying mines.<\/p>\n

Tehran could also send submarines into the waterway, according to the WSJ, and the Islamic Revolutionary Guard<\/a> has already threatened to cut key phone cables running through the strait, which could wreak havoc on global internet communications to escalate tensions further.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe blockade<\/a> is increasingly viewed in Tehran not as a substitute for war, but as a different manifestation of it,\u201d Hamidreza Azizi, a visiting fellow specializing in the Middle East at SWP, a Berlin-based research institute, told WSJ.<\/p>\n
