Nothing can stop Lindsey Vonn<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Less than three months after suffering a catastrophic crash at the Milano-Cortina Olympics that nearly resulted in a leg amputation<\/a>, the decorated skier is standing on her own two feet on the 2026 Met Gala red carpet<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve been in such a different world, especially since my crash,\u201d Vonn tells Vogue ahead of the 2026 Met Gala<\/a>. \u201cThis is kind of my coming-out party\u2014I get to be around people, wearing a dress that\u2019s beautiful and feminine, and put my crutches down for the first time.\u201d While Vonn took some test steps during her fitting, \u201cMonday will be the first few steps that I take\u2014definitely first stairs\u2014without crutches,\u201d she says. \u201cI\u2019m excited, for many reasons, to get to that point.\u201d<\/p>\n

Thom Browne<\/a> transformed Vonn into one of the centuries-old statues that line the halls of the museum\u2014a nod to the Metropolitan Museum of Art\u2019s \u201cCostume Art<\/a>\u201d exhibit, which centers the dressed body in fine art. For the skiing legend, Browne channeled the \u201cclassical body\u201d subsection of the exhibit, which is chiefly concerned with Hellenistic and Roman art. \u201cWhen he sent me the sketch, I didn\u2019t know what to expect, because Thom has a lot of variety in what he\u2019s shown at the Met,\u201d Vonn says. But she fell in love right away. \u201cI had no notes.\u201d<\/p>\n

Browne\u2019s atelier embellished the body-conscious dress with beads for a trompe l\u2019oeil marbling effect. While the beading mimics swirling limestone, the white, draped skirt pays homage to the garments in classical sculpture.<\/p>\n

Vonn was, of course, excited to find a dress that accentuated her body, though it she also needed something safe to wear after her injury. \u201cIt\u2019s actually very light and it moves really well,\u201d she says. \u201cIt\u2019s perfect for my body and the position that I\u2019m in right now.\u201d<\/p>\n

Vonn first attended the Met Gala in 2010\u2014\u201cAmerican Woman: Fashioning a National Identity,\u201d was the exhibition\u2014where she wore a violet open-back gown. She walked the Met steps again in 2013 for \u201cPunk: Chaos to Couture\u201d in a white sleeveless gown with sheer paneling. The 2026 Met Gala<\/a>, however, is her most significant yet. \u201cThis is going to be really exciting for me,\u201d Vonn says. \u201cI\u2019ve been so isolated for so long. It\u2019s going to be nice to be around a lot of people that I know and care about, and celebrate the evening in the most beautiful dress I could imagine.\u201d<\/p>\n
