It would have \u201crestored some balance to a bureau that we used to call the Bureau of Logging and Mining or the Bureau of Leasing and Minerals,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">After <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/09\/10\/climate\/trump-public-lands-rule-biden.html\" title=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">proposing to rescind the rule<\/a> in September, the Trump administration solicited public comments for 60 days. Of the 43,746 public comments it received, nearly 98 percent were opposed to rolling back the regulation, <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/westernpriorities.org\/2025\/11\/new-analysis-finds-98-of-public-comments-oppose-rescinding-the-public-lands-rule\/\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">according to an analysis<\/a> by the Center for Western Priorities, an advocacy group.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">For instance, <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.regulations.gov\/comment\/BLM-2025-0001-60336\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">tribes in northwest Alaska<\/a> wrote that the move \u201cthreatens to fragment habitat\u201d for salmon, caribou and other species that they rely on for hunting and fishing. And <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.regulations.gov\/comment\/BLM-2025-0001-44527\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Mike Mershon<\/a>, the president of the Montana Wildlife Federation, wrote that the proposal would leave federal lands in the state more vulnerable to drought, floods, wildfires and invasive species.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">Still, some public comments were supportive of rolling back the rule. <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.regulations.gov\/comment\/BLM-2025-0001-61631\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Janet VanCamp<\/a>, then the chair of the Board of Commissioners in White Pine County, Nev., a Republican-leaning area, wrote that the rule would have hindered efforts to thin forests to prevent wildfires.
