Trump<\/a> in his impeachment trial five years ago, <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2026\/05\/16\/us\/politics\/cassidy-louisiana-race-trump.html\" title=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">was defeated<\/a> on Saturday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">The two top vote-getters, Representative Julia Letlow and State Treasurer John C. Fleming, are headed to a runoff scheduled for June 27. The winner will be heavily favored in the general election because of the state\u2019s strong conservative tilt.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\"><a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/interactive\/2026\/us\/elections\/results-louisiana-primary.html\" title=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Neither candidate secured the majority<\/a> of the vote needed to advance to the November general election under Louisiana\u2019s system. Ms. Letlow won about 45 percent of the vote, and Mr. Fleming finished with around 28 percent. (Senator Cassidy picked up roughly 25 percent.)<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">Here\u2019s what to know about Ms. Letlow, 45, and Mr. Fleming, 74.<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Trump endorsed Ms. Letlow.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">The congresswoman, a former teacher and university administrator from Monroe, was backed <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2026\/01\/18\/us\/politics\/trump-bill-cassidy-julia-letlow-primary-challenge-endorsement.html\" title=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">by the president<\/a> even before she formally entered the race. In January, Mr. Trump urged Ms. Letlow to challenge Mr. Cassidy, writing on social media: \u201cRUN JULIA RUN!!!\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">After she finished first on Saturday, the president celebrated not only Mr. Cassidy\u2019s loss but Ms. Letlow\u2019s step toward the Senate.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">\u201cJulia Letlow is a spectacular person, and will never let you down!\u201d <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/truthsocial.com\/@realDonaldTrump\/posts\/116587615659706793\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Mr. Trump wrote<\/a> on social media.<\/p>\n<p>She first ran for Congress after her husband, a representative-elect, died of Covid-19 complications.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">Ms. Letlow, the first Republican woman elected to Congress from Louisiana, <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2021\/03\/20\/us\/new-orleans-house-runoff.html\" title=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">first won her seat<\/a> in early 2021. She emerged <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/interactive\/2021\/03\/20\/us\/elections\/results-louisiana-primary-elections.html\" title=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">from a special election<\/a> to claim the seat her husband, Luke Letlow, won the previous November; <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/live\/2020\/12\/29\/world\/covid-19-coronavirus-updates\/a-congressman-elect-from-louisiana-died-from-covid-19-complications?smid=url-share\" title=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">he died the following month<\/a> of complications from Covid, days before he was to take office.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\"><a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.congress.gov\/member\/district\/julia-letlow\/L000595\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Ms. Letlow represents a deep-red, L-shaped district<\/a> in northern and eastern Louisiana. On Saturday, she performed best in the rural northern Louisiana areas that make up much of her district, winning more than two-thirds of the vote in some counties.<\/p>\n<p>She once supported diversity, equity and inclusion programs.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">While interviewing to be president of the University of Louisiana at Monroe in 2020, Ms. Letlow spoke favorably <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2026\/04\/01\/us\/politics\/julia-letlow-louisiana-republican-primary.html\" title=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">about D.E.I. efforts<\/a>, expressed concerns about \u201cunconscious bias\u201d on campus and denounced the school faculty\u2019s lack of diversity as \u201cshameful.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">\u201cWe don\u2019t have enough women of color at the top,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">Ms. Letlow did not receive the job, and her comments became an attack line for her opponents in this year\u2019s primary. <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=X5Z_RTMqx80\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">She told Louisiana First News<\/a> that though she initially supported D.E.I. programs, she quickly decided they had been \u201chijacked by the radical left and turned into indoctrination.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Fleming was a founder of the ultraconservative House Freedom Caucus.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">A physician before entering politics, Mr. Fleming ran for Congress in 2008 and won, <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2008\/12\/07\/us\/07louisiana.html\" title=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">replacing Representative Jim McCrery<\/a>, a Republican.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">Mr. Fleming, who lives outside Shreveport, went on to serve four terms, representing the hilly northwestern corner of the state.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">He joined congressmen including Jim Jordan, Ron DeSantis and Mark Meadows in forming the Freedom Caucus, a group of hard-line Republicans banded together to push for changes in how the House Republican leadership operated.<\/p>\n<p>He served in the first Trump administration.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">Mr. Fleming served as White House deputy chief of staff in the final months of Mr. Trump\u2019s first term. He was in the role in the weeks after the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">He also worked in the Health and Human Services Department during Mr. Trump\u2019s first term and, for a period, as assistant secretary of commerce for economic development.
