{"id":3076,"date":"2026-03-10T04:44:13","date_gmt":"2026-03-10T04:44:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/news\/3076\/"},"modified":"2026-03-10T04:44:13","modified_gmt":"2026-03-10T04:44:13","slug":"sheinbaum-is-defiant-as-trump-vows-military-action-in-mexico","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/news\/3076\/","title":{"rendered":"Sheinbaum is defiant as Trump vows military action in Mexico"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>MEXICO CITY\u00a0\u2014\u00a0President Trump has deployed military might to fight drug cartels, <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/world-nation\/story\/2025-10-22\/the-u-s-strikes-another-alleged-drug-boat-this-time-in-the-pacific\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">blowing up<\/a> dozens of alleged smugglers at sea and helping Ecuador bomb an apparent criminal training camps. <\/p>\n<p>In recent days he announced the formation of a \u201cbrand-new military coalition\u201d of mostly right-wing governments from across the Americas that, he said, are united in \u201ca commitment to using lethal military force to destroy the sinister cartels and terrorist networks.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe need your help,\u201d he told regional leaders gathered Saturday at his golf club outside Miami. \u201cJust tell us where they are.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>On Monday, Mexico\u2019s leader suggested Washington should focus on other steps: Containing the voracious American appetite for illicit drugs, and combating <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/world\/mexico-americas\/la-fg-mexico-guns-20190430-story.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">illegal arms trafficking<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf the flow of illegal weapons from the United States into Mexico were stopped, these groups wouldn\u2019t have access to this type of high-powered weaponry to carry out their criminal activities,\u201d President Claudia Sheinabum said at her daily news conference, citing a statistic from the U.S. Department of Justice that 75% of guns used by criminal groups in Mexico were <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/world-nation\/story\/2025-06-08\/mexico-lost-court-battle-but-raised-awareness-about-u-s-guns\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">smuggled from the United States.<\/a> <\/p>\n<p>Sheinbaum \u2014 whose stated strategy has been to keep a \u201ccool head\u201d in the face of Trump\u2019s repeated verbal broadsides \u2014 was responding to a question about Trump\u2019s latest threats to deploy military assets against cartels in her country. Trump made the threat while speaking at a meeting of the newly inaugurated \u201cAmericas Counter Cartel Coalition.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The confab featured some of Trump\u2019s favored right-wing leaders, such as President Javier Milei of Argentina and President <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/world-nation\/story\/2025-05-18\/el-salvadors-millennial-dictator-disappeared-thousands-but-quashed-gangs-how-long-will-his-popularity-last\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Nayib Bukele <\/a>of El Salvador.<\/p>\n<p>Not invited were the left-wing presidents of Latin America\u2019s three most populous nations, <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/world-nation\/story\/2026-03-02\/trumps-shift-from-hostility-to-courting-brazils-leftist-leader\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Brazil<\/a>, Colombia and Mexico.<\/p>\n<p>            <img class=\"image\" alt=\"President Trump signing a proclamation while surrounded by people\"   width=\"1200\" height=\"800\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/1773117853_218_.jpeg\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\"\/>         <\/p>\n<p>President Trump signs a proclamation committing to countering cartel criminal activity at the Shield of the Americas Summit in Doral, Fla., on Saturday.<\/p>\n<p>(Rebecca Blackwell \/ Associated Press)<\/p>\n<p>During his speech, Trump took special aim at Sheinbaum, mocking the Mexican president\u2019s steadfast refusal of direct U.S. military assistance, which she says would violate Mexico\u2019s sovereignty. <\/p>\n<p>Trump first praised Sheinbaum \u2014 \u201cShe\u2019s got a beautiful voice, a beautiful woman\u201d \u2014 but then adopted a falsetto tone to mimic her: \u201cPresident. President. President,\u201d he said. \u201cNo. No. No. Please president.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe must recognize [that] the epicenter of cartel violence is Mexico,\u201d Trump continued. \u201cThe Mexican cartels are fueling and orchestrating much of the bloodshed and chaos in this hemisphere. And the United States government will do whatever is necessary to defend our national security and protect the safety of the American people.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The comments were among the strongest to date about Mexico from Trump, who has previously said Mexico is \u201crun\u201d by drug traffickers and that Sheinbaum is \u201cso afraid of the cartels that she can\u2019t even think.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>Mexico is both a major corridor for South American cocaine headed for U.S. markets and a production zone for fentanyl, methamphetamine and other synthetic drugs smuggled into the United States.<\/p>\n<p>Responding in part to U.S. pressure, Mexico has launched a broad crackdown in the last year or so, arresting hundreds of trafficking suspects, destroying clandestine drug labs and handing over scores of alleged cartel operatives to U.S. authorities. Last month, <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/world-nation\/story\/2026-02-23\/mexico-violence-el-mencho\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Mexico killed<\/a> one of Mexico\u2019s major drug kingpins, Nemesio Rub\u00e9n Oseguera Cervantes, known as \u201cEl Mencho,\u201d during a raid at his mountain hideout.<\/p>\n<p>Sheinbaum, when asked about Trump\u2019s comments over the weekend, said she appreciated that he accurately reflected her refusal to allow the U.S. military inside Mexico.
