The stabbing death of an 18-year-old college student in an English port city has become the latest flashpoint in a debate over policing, racism and Britain\u2019s deteriorating relationship with the United States.<\/p>\n
Vice President JD Vance claimed in a social media post on Friday that the murder of Henry Nowak<\/a> last year by Vickrum Digwa, 23, was evidence that \u201cEuropean elites\u201d had failed to oppose the \u201cpolitics of self-hatred and the mass invasion of migrants.\u201d<\/p>\n Mr. Digwa, who is Sikh and was described by prosecutors as \u201cweapons obsessed,\u201d was convicted of stabbing Mr. Nowak in Southampton five times on Dec. 3, 2025, with a religious knife he was carrying.<\/p>\n When the police arrived, Mr. Digwa lied repeatedly, claiming he had been the victim of a racist attack by Mr. Nowak. Police officers handcuffed Mr. Nowak for about a minute, even as he told them he could not breathe and had been stabbed, before they realized he was severely injured and began administering first aid.<\/p>\n Mr. Vance\u2019s intervention has been met with a fierce response by British government officials, who noted that Mr. Digwa was not an immigrant. Mr. Trump\u2019s latest National Security Strategy<\/a> pledged to push \u201cEurope to remain European, to regain its civilizational self-confidence, and to abandon its failed focus on regulatory suffocation.\u201d<\/p>\n Over the weekend, David Lammy, the deputy prime minister, who has in the past talked of a friendship with Mr. Vance over their shared Christian faith, said he had called the vice president<\/a> to express his disagreement.<\/p>\n \u201cI told him he was wrong: This has got nothing to do with mass migration,\u201d Mr. Lammy said on the BBC\u2019s Sunday morning program. \u201cThe young man who perpetrated this crime was a Brit, born and raised in this country.\u201d<\/p>\n The stabbing case exploded into public view last week when Mr. Digwa was sentenced to life in prison for Mr. Nowak\u2019s murder, with a minimum term of 21 years. After footage was released of officers handcuffing Mr. Nowak, Nigel Farage, the leader of the right-wing populist Reform U.K. Party, said that British people should respond with \u201cpure cold rage.\u201d<\/p>\n That night, violent demonstrators<\/a> gathered in Southampton and threw rocks, flares and garbage cans at the police, wounding 11 officers.<\/p>\n Mark Nowak, the victim\u2019s father, criticized the police\u2019s initial response to his son in a statement after the sentencing but also said the family did \u201cnot want his death to be used to create further division, hatred or tension.\u201d<\/p>\n Nevertheless, the murder has become the latest in a series of increasingly nasty diplomatic clashes between the governments of the two longstanding allies.<\/p>\n Mr. Vance, in particular, has been the leader inside the Trump administration for assailing what he has repeatedly called the decline of Western civilization in Europe. The vice president has taken special aim at Britain, where he argues that successive governments have abridged the free speech rights of right-wing voices and flung open the island to waves of illegal migrants.<\/p>\n \u201cHenry Nowak died the same way a civilization dies: abandoned, handcuffed by authorities who neither trusted nor cared for him, and accused of hate crimes he did not commit,\u201d Mr. Vance wrote on social media. \u201cHis murder is as tragic as it is enraging.\u201d<\/p>\n Most political leaders in Britain agree on the tragedy, if not the rage. In remarks to Parliament last week, Mr. Starmer said that \u201cas a dad of a 17-year-old boy, I felt sick. I can only imagine how devastated his family are. It is extremely moving. Henry\u2019s life has been stolen.\u201d<\/p>\n But Mr. Starmer and his aides strongly reject what they say is unwarranted interference by the Trump administration into Britain\u2019s political life. In his remarks on the case last week, the prime minister castigated right-wing politicians in Britain for knowingly misrepresenting the details of Mr. Nowak\u2019s stabbing.<\/p>\n At Mr. Digwa\u2019s sentencing, Judge William Mousley said<\/a>, citing a pathologist\u2019s assessment, that even if the police had begun first aid sooner, they could not have saved Mr. Nowak given the nature of the wound.<\/p>\n Mr. Starmer cited the call for unity from Mr. Nowak\u2019s father, saying: \u201cI think those words have resonated with people across the country.
