Steven Spielberg\u2019s latest sci-fi thriller, \u201cDisclosure Day,\u201d topped the box office this weekend, an encouraging sign for what could be a big summer for theaters.<\/p>\n

The film, which stars Emily Blunt and Josh O\u2019Connor, brought in $44 million in the U.S. and Canada for a worldwide total of $92.9 million, according to studio estimates. The opening weekend totals beat box office analysts\u2019 expectations of about $40 million to $50 million.<\/p>\n

\u201cDisclosure Day\u201d is Spielberg\u2019s latest alien-centric movie<\/a> that charts a desperate race to show the world the truth about extraterrestrials.<\/p>\n

The film, which had a production budget of about $115 million, was also scored by legendary composer and longtime Spielberg collaborator John Williams, who is now 94 years old.<\/p>\n

Spielberg described the film in April as \u201cway closer to truth than fiction\u201d during a speech at the CinemaCon trade convention in Las Vegas. The veteran director of 1977\u2019s \u201cClose Encounters of the Third Kind,\u201d 1982\u2019s \u201cE.T. the Extra-Terrestrial\u201d and 2005\u2019s \u201cWar of the Worlds\u201d said at the time that he\u2019s been curious about \u201cwhat\u2019s going on in the night\u201d since he was a child and \u201cbeen very fixated on the possibilities.\u201d<\/p>\n

Focus Features\u2019 \u201cObsession\u201d came in second at the box office with a domestic haul of $19 million, a continuation of the film\u2019s strong run in theaters.<\/p>\n

\u201cScary Movie,\u201d \u201cBackrooms\u201d and \u201cMasters of the Universe\u201d rounded out the top five at the box office.<\/p>\n

Recent box office performance \u2014 particularly with Gen Z hits<\/a> \u201cObsession\u201d and A24\u2019s \u201cBackrooms\u201d \u2014 along with a slate of upcoming blockbuster franchise installments has buoyed the hopes of exhibitors and studio executives for a strong summer.<\/p>\n

Next week, Walt Disney Co. and Pixar will release \u201cToy Story 5,\u201d while Warner Bros.\u2019 DC Studios has \u201cSupergirl\u201d landing in late June.<\/p>\n

Universal Pictures and Illumination\u2019s \u201cMinions & Monsters,\u201d Disney\u2019s live-action \u201cMoana,\u201d Christopher Nolan\u2019s \u201cThe Odyssey\u201d and Sony Pictures\u2019 \u201cSpider-Man: Brand New Day\u201d are all slated for July.<\/p>\n

That steady cadence of new and different films is key for a healthy box office and a successful summer, said Daniel Loria, editorial director at the Box Office Co.<\/p>\n
