{"id":43944,"date":"2026-06-22T22:58:25","date_gmt":"2026-06-22T22:58:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/news\/43944\/"},"modified":"2026-06-22T22:58:25","modified_gmt":"2026-06-22T22:58:25","slug":"abc-launches-on-air-campaign-warning-viewers-of-fcc-actions","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/news\/43944\/","title":{"rendered":"ABC Launches On-Air Campaign Warning Viewers Of FCC Actions"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tUPDATED, with <a href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/tag\/fcc\/\" id=\"auto-tag_fcc\" data-tag=\"fcc\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">FCC<\/a> comment: ABC is taking to the airwaves to warn viewers of the <a href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/2026\/05\/fcc-the-view-equal-time-abc-1236919100\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">FCC\u2019s crackdown on <a href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/tag\/the-view\/\" id=\"auto-tag_the-view\" data-tag=\"the-view\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">The View<\/a><\/a> and the agency\u2019s unusual demand that the <a href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/2026\/04\/fcc-disney-jimmy-kimmel-1236874587\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">network\u2019s stations seek early renewal <\/a>of their broadcast licenses.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tThe spots, which will start airing on Monday, are the latest pushback from The Walt Disney Co. and the network, which says that the actions of the FCC under its Trump-appointed chairman, <a href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/tag\/brendan-carr\/\" id=\"auto-tag_brendan-carr\" data-tag=\"brendan-carr\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Brendan Carr<\/a>, are chilling free speech.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tThe spots also urge viewers to file comments with the FCC, as deadlines near for public input as part of the agency\u2019s proceedings.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tThe spot for The View starts with images of the show\u2019s founder, Barbara Walters, talking about the idea was for a program featuring \u201cdifferent women, different points of view.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tA narrator then says, \u201cThe View has welcomed your favorite guests and covered the issues you care about for nearly 30 years now. The FCC wants to control who is allowed to appear on the show. Viewers, use your voice.\u201d The narrator then directs viewers to a QR code where they <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fcc.gov\/ecfs\/search\/search-filings\/results?proceedings_name=26-124&amp;sort=date_disseminated,DESC\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">can comment on the FCC proceeding<\/a>, with a deadline of July 6.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tCarr launched an investigation into the show after it featured James Talarico, a Democratic candidate for U.S. Senate in Texas. The probe is of ABC\u2019s owned station in Houston, which held that the show is exempt from equal time requirements because it is a \u201cbonafide\u201d news program. The equal time regulation requires broadcasters who feature political candidates to offer comparable time to rivals, if requested.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tABC, however, said that the FCC\u2019s action was \u201cunprecedented,\u201d diverging from years in which talk shows in general have been treated as \u201cbona fide\u201d news programs, and therefore not on the hook to provide equal time. In an FCC filing, ABC pointed to a 2002 FCC ruling that confirmed that\u00a0The View\u00a0was exempt. The show is produced under the network\u2019s news division.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tAs of Monday morning, nearly 2,500 comments have been filed in the FCC\u2019s View proceeding. By Monday mid-afternoon, after the campaign had been launched, more than 6,100 comments had been filed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tThe equal time rule is about political candidates as guests, yet it is often mistaken for the Fairness Doctrine, which required broadcasters to present a variety of viewpoints on issues of major public interest. That doctrine was abandoned by the agency nearly four decades ago, during the Reagan administration.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tAn FCC spokesperson said in a statement, \u201cDisney wants the FCC to classify \u2018The View\u2019 as a \u2018bona fide news program.\u2019 And it has chosen to run a campaign of misinformation to make its case\u2014misleading viewers about the law.\u00a0 That is a choice.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tThe network said that it was ordered by the FCC to petition for a ruling that The View was a \u201cbona fide\u201d news program and exempt. ABC also claimed that Carr was singling out The View, while <a href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/2026\/05\/abc-the-view-fcc-first-amendment-1236887960\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">not applying the same treatment <\/a>to broadcast radio talk shows, which are dominated by voices on the right.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tIn another proceeding, the FCC is taking public comment on the renewal of licenses to eight stations that the network owns: WABC-TV in New York, KABC-TV in Los Angeles, WLS-TV in Chicago, WPVI-TV in Philadelphia, KTRK-TV in Houston, KGO-TV in San Francisco, WTVD-TV in Raleigh-Durham, NC, and KFSN-TV in Fresno, CA.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tIn one of the ABC spots tailored for WABC, a narrator says, \u201cNew Yorkers, use your voice. No one supports your community like ABC 7. Sharing your stories, bringing us together, Channel 7 has proudly served you for more than 75 years. Every day, we commit to inform, entertain and serve you. Now the FCC is questioning our commitment to the community.\u201d The spot directs viewers to a QR code for filing comments. \u201cYou have until July 29 to tell the FCC to keep your trusted local station on the air.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tABC stations were set to start renewal of its licenses in 2028, but Carr ordered an early process, citing the investigation of Disney\u2019s diversity, equity and inclusion policies. The order came after Trump called for the firing of late-night host Jimmy Kimmel, who has directed a lot of his humor at the administration.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tIn a filing with the FCC, the network called the early renewal \u201can extraordinary demonstration of power and coercion directed at disfavored editorial voices which sends a clear warning to every broadcaster in America.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tThe<a href=\"https:\/\/www.fcc.gov\/ecfs\/search\/search-filings\/results?q=(proceedings.name:(%2226-131%22))\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"> FCC proceeding<\/a> asks whether the stations have been serving the public interest.
