{"id":48949,"date":"2026-07-04T12:18:35","date_gmt":"2026-07-04T12:18:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/news\/48949\/"},"modified":"2026-07-04T12:18:35","modified_gmt":"2026-07-04T12:18:35","slug":"heat-wave-in-france-saw-2000-more-deaths-says-public-health-authority","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/news\/48949\/","title":{"rendered":"Heat wave in France saw 2,000 more deaths, says public health authority"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>PARIS (AP) \u2014 Deaths surged by nearly a third in France during <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/heat-wave-france-europe-climate-change-record-81c341900166135de6cbc0f49156477b\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the hottest week<\/a> of a record heat wave last month, the country\u2019s public health authority said Friday, reporting at least 2,000 more deaths than in the previous week when temperatures were already climbing and <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/france-heat-wave-climate-change-health-hospitals-d2c26b56abd848e1a8553a0d702ee0b3\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">filling emergency wards<\/a> with heat victims.<\/p>\n<p>The new and still incomplete figures from Public Health France doubled its first preliminary estimate of <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/europe-heat-temperature-records-france-deaths-germany-61f444317600cf1bd9af5af84cb582bd\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">at least 1,000 additional deaths<\/a> that it gave last Sunday. That earlier estimate covered just three of the hottest days of extreme, deadly heat. <\/p>\n<p>In Paris, funeral service directors have said they\u2019ve struggled to find places to store bodies before burial or cremation, with <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/france-europe-heat-wave-weather-climate-change-a9095af72d14cfdd9ca43637490083e9\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">some mortuaries<\/a> saying they were full and having to turn bodies away.<\/p>\n<p>The updated tally of deaths from Public Health France spans the week of June 22 to June 28, during which France saw its hottest-ever days and records shattered for peak daytime and nighttime temperatures in many cities and towns across the country. The heat also <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/heat-wave-europe-numbers-594f73db651f9683c43acf04e009d5e7\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">broke temperature records<\/a> in many other parts of Europe.<\/p>\n<p>Public Health France said it has counted 8,973 deaths so far for that week, cautioning that the number is still only partial. It said the preliminary total was 29% more than the 6,948 deaths registered for the previous week of June 15 to June 21, when the heat wave started.<\/p>\n<p>The difference between the two sets of figures \u2014 a total so far of 2,025 \u2014 is therefore considered to be additional deaths from one week to the next, from all causes and covering all age groups, it said.<\/p>\n<p>At the Paris-Saclay Hospital, patients suffering from heat exposure started arriving in a surge on June 20, Dr. Nicolas Gonzales, head of the emergency department, told The Associated Press.<\/p>\n<p>He said they treated heat victims for heart attacks, dehydration, kidney malfunctions and other heat-related problems, from children to older people living alone.<\/p>\n<p>Public Health France said there was a particularly sharp increase week-on-week in the number of deaths in private homes, with those figures up 91%.
