Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of Israel on Sunday responded directly<\/a> to Mayor Zohran Mamdani\u2019s calls for his arrest, accusing the mayor of \u201cfomenting hate\u201d and referring to a video address that Mr. Mamdani made last week as \u201chate speech.\u201d<\/p>\n

In an appearance on Fox News\u2019s \u201cSunday Morning Futures,\u201d Mr. Netanyahu criticized the mayor for the video<\/a>, released Tuesday, in which Mr. Mamdani called him a \u201cwar criminal,\u201d condemned the war in Gaza and urged the U.S. government to enforce an International Criminal Court warrant for the prime minister\u2019s arrest.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe\u2019s fomenting hate,\u201d Mr. Netanyahu said, adding, \u201cHe\u2019s trying to turn one group against the other.\u201d<\/p>\n

The prime minister also said that he did not think it was \u201caccidental\u201d that a Jewish man was stabbed<\/a> on the Upper West Side of Manhattan after the mayor released the video.<\/p>\n

In the attacks on the Upper West Side on Thursday, the assailant first stabbed a 57-year-old Asian man, Chok Sung, and then stabbed the Jewish man, Moshe Yezhak Grunhaus, the police said. He yelled \u201cAllahu akbar\u201d during both attacks, according to accounts from the victims and witnesses.<\/p>\n

The police arrested Raul Morales in the stabbings and charged him on Friday with two counts of attempted murder as a hate crime.<\/p>\n

Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch said that detectives were still investigating Mr. Morales\u2019s motive. While Mr. Morales did not have a history of mental health issues documented with the department, she added, it appeared that his mental state might have played a role in the attacks.<\/p>\n

Both victims survived the stabbings.<\/p>\n

\u201cI speak to Jewish Americans in New York, and they\u2019re afraid right now,\u201d Mr. Netanyahu said in the Fox News interview.<\/p>\n

Arguing that Mr. Mamdani was creating divisions among New Yorkers, he said, \u201cHe\u2019s supposed to be the mayor of all New Yorkers, Jews, Christians, Muslims, everyone.\u201d<\/p>\n

Asked about Mr. Netanyahu\u2019s comments on Sunday, Mr. Mamdani\u2019s spokesman Joe Calvello pointed to a New York Post interview<\/a> with the mayor on Saturday, in which Mr. Mamdani said he was committed to countering antisemitism<\/a> across the city.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe know that while Jewish New Yorkers constitute a minority in the city, they continue to comprise a majority of the victims of all hate crimes,\u201d Mr. Mamdani told The Post. \u201cThis is a city that will not only look to keep Jewish New Yorkers safe; we also look to celebrate and cherish Jewish New Yorkers.\u201d<\/p>\n

A week ago, Mr. Mamdani told The New York Times that he was in \u201cactive conversation\u201d with city lawyers about the prospect of arresting Mr. Netanyahu, should the Israeli leader come to New York City \u2014 a pledge Mr. Mamdani made while campaigning. On Tuesday, he released the video<\/a>, in which he said that while the city\u2019s Law Department had looked into the matter, the city did not have the power to make the arrest. The video has been viewed by nearly 100 million people.<\/p>\n

On Fox News, Mr. Netanyahu accused Mr. Mamdani of having \u201ccelebrated the Oct. 7 massacre.\u201d The mayor on Wednesday, as he has before, condemned those attacks, in which Hamas militants crossed the border and killed more than 1,200 people, calling them \u201ca horrific war crime.\u201d In his video, he called Mr. Netanyahu \u201cthe architect of a horrific genocide against the Palestinian people\u201d in reference to the war in Gaza, in which more than 70,000 people have been killed.<\/p>\n

Mr. Netanyahu said he still planned to come to New York City in September for the United Nations General Assembly meeting. Last year, representatives from dozens of countries walked out of the General Assembly meeting<\/a> just before Mr. Netanyahu gave a defiant speech rejecting the creation of a Palestinian state.<\/p>\n
