LOS ANGELES (AP) \u2014 Autumn Durald Arkapaw became the first woman to win the best cinematography Oscar<\/a> Sunday. The 46-year-old American was recognized for her work<\/a> on Ryan Coogler\u2019s \u201cSinners.\u201d<\/p>\n

The profession has come a long way since Arkapaw, whose varied credits include \u201cBlack Panther: Wakanda Forever,\u201d \u201cThe Last Showgirl\u201d and a Rihanna music video, started exploring cinematography as a career path.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m so honored to be here and I really want all the women in the room to stand up because I feel like I don\u2019t get here without you guys,\u201d Arkapaw told the audience. <\/p>\n

Holding her Oscar, she said, \u201cI have felt so much love from all the women on this whole campaign. I feel like moments like this happen because of people like you guys.\u201d<\/p>\n

It wasn\u2019t too long ago that she said she struggled to find many women in the field besides Ellen Kuras<\/a> (\u201cEternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind\u201d). Though there are more working today than there were 20 years ago, even Oscar nominations have been few and far between. Only three women before her had been nominated: Rachel Morrison<\/a> (who worked with Coogler on \u201cFruitvale Station\u201d and \u201cBlack Panther\u201d) was the first for \u201cMudbound\u201d in 2018, followed by Ari Wegner<\/a> for \u201cThe Power of the Dog\u201d and Mandy Walker for \u201cElvis.\u201d Arkapaw was the first woman of color to be nominated.<\/p>\n

Arkapaw greeted several of her \u201cSinners\u201d colleagues as she made her way to the stage.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhenever I say thank you to Ryan, he replies and says, \u2018No, thank you for believing in me and trusting me,\u2019\u201d she said. \u201cHe\u2019s a very honorable person and he means it, he really truly means it.\u201d<\/p>\n

Arkapaw thanked her husband and parents. Her young son, Aidan, was carried down the aisle to get closer to the stage after she asked out loud where he was. <\/p>\n

\u201cThis is an honor,\u201d she said before departing.<\/p>\n

She is also the first Black person to win the category. She told reporters backstage: \u201cA lot of little girls that look like me will sleep really well tonight.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cSinners\u201d is project that was already historic<\/a> for women in cinematography. Before it, no woman had ever shot a movie on IMAX film before.<\/p>\n

\u201cI heard a phrase that said you need to see you to be you,\u201d she told The Associated Press last year. \u201cI think for us females in business, the more women are able to shoot on large format, it will inspire the younger girls who maybe don\u2019t think that they can get there.\u201d<\/p>\n

A native of Northern California, she studied art history at Loyola Marymount University before attending graduate school at the American Film Institute where she used a background in photography to pursue cinematography. <\/p>\n

Arkapaw had shot \u201cBlack Panther: Wakanda Forever\u201d on IMAX digital, but film presented its own set of challenges. The cameras are big and loud and have a reputation for being limiting. Before beginning, she consulted with \u201cOppenheimer\u201d<\/a> cinematographer Hoyte van Hoytema,<\/a> who told her not to worry about the size or weight of the equipment and to shoot the movie as she would with any other kind of camera.<\/p>\n

\u201cHearing that straight off was inspiring and encouraging and we took that advice and just told our story,\u201d Arkapaw said. \u201cIt was very freeing.\u201d<\/p>\n

In the end, they decided to employ a combination of IMAX film and Ultra Panavision 70, an even rarer format that Quentin Tarantino resurrected for \u201cThe Hateful Eight.\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n

One of Arkapaw\u2019s favorite scenes in \u201cSinners\u201d was one they weren\u2019t even initially going to do on IMAX film because it was dialogue heavy and the cameras are notoriously noisy. But if her work on \u201cWakanda\u201d taught her anything about Coogler, it\u2019s that he\u2019s always looking to push boundaries.<\/p>\n

The scene is the introduction to Jack O\u2019Connell\u2019s Irish vampire Remmick and the Choctaw trying to hunt him down, which they shot like a Western as the sun sets in the distance.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe had a lot of beautiful crane work in that and some intimate stuff. Ryan loves a hallway, so there\u2019s a Steadicam shot inside. It\u2019s very eerie,\u201d she said. \u201cI can\u2019t see that scene in any other format now.\u201d<\/p>\n
