She is the first woman to ever win the Oscar for best cinematography. Arkapaw, who is of Filipino and African American Creole descent, is now also the first woman of color to win.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tIn the history of the category, only three women have ever been nominated: Rachel Morrison in 2018 for \u201cMudbound,\u201d Ari Wegner in 2021 for \u201cThe Power of the Dog\u201d and Mandy Walker in 2022 for \u201cElvis.\u201d Arkapaw also made history as the first female cinematographer to shoot on Imax 65mm and Ultra Panavision for \u201cSinners.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tDuring her thank you speech, she thanked director Ryan Coogler and said, \u201cThank you for believing in me and thank you for trusting me, and that\u2019s the kind of guy I get to make films with.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tArkapaw also thanks fellow cinematographer Rachel Morrison. She said,  \u201cI have felt so much love from all the women on this whole campaign and gotten to meet so many people, and I just feel like moments like this happen because of you guys, and I want to thank you for that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tBackstage, Arkapaw was met with huge applause. Speaking about the women in the Dolby Theater who gave her the biggest cheers, the cinematographer said, \u201cMoments like this don\u2019t happen without women standing up for you and advocating for you. I know that this happened because of that.\u201d She added, \u201cI\u2019ve learned over the past few months going through this process that it does take a village to make stuff like this happen. But this isn\u2019t about me anymore. This is about so much more.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tIn the lead-up to the <a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/t\/oscars\/\" id=\"auto-tag_oscars\" data-tag=\"oscars\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Oscars<\/a>, Arkapaw was nominated at the BAFTAs, British Society of Cinematographers and American Society of Cinematographers, and she missed every pre-cursor going into Oscar night \u2014 but she prevailed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tShe was nominated alongside\u00a0Adolpho Veloso (\u201cTrain Dreams\u201d), Michael Bauman (\u201cOne Battle After Another\u201d), Dan Laustsen (\u201cFrankenstein\u201d) and Darius Khondji (\u201cMarty Supreme\u201d).<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cSinners\u201d marked her second collaboration with Coogler after the two shot \u201cBlack Panther: Wakanda Forever.\u201d Last year, she told\u00a0Variety.\u00a0\u201cWe support each other. I\u2019ve learned how to read the story through [Ryan\u2019s] eyes, to understand what he needs to tell it and what is important to him.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tOne of the most talked-about scenes in \u201cSinners\u201d is the \u201cpiercing the veil\u201d sequence. \u201cAt first this sequence is grounded in reality and then turns into a surreal moment in which the camera goes up to the roof and burns away, then comes back down into a wonderful fire exterior shot which transitions into the introduction of three strong characters, and then you\u2019re back into the film,\u201d she explained.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cSinners\u201d\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/2026\/film\/awards\/sinners-oscars-nominations-record-16-nods-1236632543\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">broke an all-time Oscar record with 16 nominations<\/a>. It received nods for best picture; director; actor (Michael B. Jordan); supporting actress (Wunmi Mosaku); supporting actor (Delroy Lindo); original screenplay; casting; production design; cinematography; costume design; film editing; makeup and hairstyling; sound; visual effects; original score; and original song for \u201cI Lied to You.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"\u201cSinners\u201d DP Autumn Durald Arkapaw has made history.
