Not only <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/games\/890194\/microsoft-teases-its-next-xbox-says-project-helix-will-play-pc-games-too\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">will it play PC games<\/a>, but we now know, courtesy of a leaked memo obtained by The Verge\u2019s Tom Warren, that it will run games from every generation of Xbox: the original 2001 Xbox, the 2005 Xbox 360, the 2013 Xbox One, and the 2020 Xbox Series, as well as any new Helix titles.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1044qizi _18mzr4b1 _18mzr4b0 _19wv7tc1\">We already knew that Microsoft was bringing a limited sample of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/news\/969117\/microsoft-xbox-games-pc-backward-compatibility\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">original Xbox games to PC<\/a>, and we already knew it was prepping a way <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/report\/960173\/microsoft-xbox-disc-to-digital-feature-physical-game-collection\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">to digitize your Xbox One and Xbox Series discs<\/a>. The leak fills in the missing puzzle pieces.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1044qizi _18mzr4b1 _18mzr4b0 _19wv7tc1\">Microsoft is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/games\/974544\/microsoft-xbox-360-games-pc-disc-digital-program\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">bringing Xbox 360 games to PC, too<\/a>, and explicitly states that those games will run on Helix in addition to \u201cXbox PCs.\u201d The document also clearly states that your digitized Xbox One and Xbox Series discs can follow you to \u201cany Xbox device,\u201d so Helix will get those too. The leaked memo is Microsoft trying to convince those publishers by dangling profit in front of their eyes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1044qizi _18mzr4b1 _18mzr4b0 _19wv7tc1\">The memo is literally addressed to publishers, and it\u2019s transparently a sales pitch. Maybe Johnny won\u2019t buy a new copy of Mass Effect from you, EA, but perhaps he\u2019ll buy five future games digitally!<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1044qizi _18mzr4b1 _18mzr4b0 _19wv7tc1\">Don\u2019t get me wrong, it\u2019s good that Microsoft has carrots to dangle here. Because it sounds like the Xbox maker can\u2019t even convert Xbox discs to digital without that publisher buy-in.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1044qizi _18mzr4b1 _18mzr4b0 _19wv7tc1\">Though Microsoft says publishers don\u2019t need to lift a finger to make disc-to-digital work \u2014 \u201cPublisher action: none required,\u201d it writes. But what would make these competing platforms great?<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1044qizi _18mzr4b1 _18mzr4b0 _19wv7tc1\">With Sony, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/games\/963132\/sony-playstation-future-handheld-pc-business-meeting-end-of-discs\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">I think the answer is handheld<\/a>.
