{"id":613,"date":"2026-03-04T12:47:11","date_gmt":"2026-03-04T12:47:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/news\/613\/"},"modified":"2026-03-04T12:47:11","modified_gmt":"2026-03-04T12:47:11","slug":"republicans-pick-former-mlb-player-mark-teixeira-in-tx21","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/news\/613\/","title":{"rendered":"Republicans pick former MLB player Mark Teixeira in TX21"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>To replace one of the biggest policy wonks in Texas\u2019 congressional delegation, Republicans skipped over a long list of political insiders and chose former MLB player <a href=\"https:\/\/sanantonioreport.org\/profile\/mark-teixeira-2026-candidate-for-texas-21st-congressional-district\/\" type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/sanantonioreport.org\/profile\/mark-teixeira-2026-candidate-for-texas-21st-congressional-district\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Mark Teixeira<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>With votes still coming in, Teixeira was taking 61.61% of the vote in a <a href=\"https:\/\/sanantonioreport.org\/texas-congressional-district-21-republican-primary-debate-san-antonio\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">12-way GOP<\/a> primary. He secured the Republican nomination for the deep red 21st Congressional District without a runoff.<\/p>\n<p>He\u2019ll face Democratic nominee <a href=\"https:\/\/sanantonioreport.org\/profile\/kristin-hook-2026-candidate-for-texas-21st-congressional-district\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Kristin Hook,<\/a> a former scientist for the National Institutes of Health, in November.<\/p>\n<p>Unlike incumbent U.S. Rep. <a href=\"https:\/\/sanantonioreport.org\/profile\/chip-roy-2026-candidate-for-texas-attorney-general\/\" type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/sanantonioreport.org\/profile\/chip-roy-2026-candidate-for-texas-attorney-general\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Chip Roy<\/a> (R-Dripping Springs), who spent his career working for various Texas GOP leaders before running for Congress in 2018, Teixeira is new to politics.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>He started his career with the Texas Rangers in 2003, played 14 seasons of professional baseball in Atlanta, Los Angeles and New York before moving his family back to Texas.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is the first time I have run for anything. I didn\u2019t run for student council as a kid. I have never run for anything in my life,\u201d Teixeira told a gathering of the Young Republicans of Bexar County at the Magic Time Machine last month.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"780\" height=\"420\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/tx21.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-5432697\"  \/><\/p>\n<p>While many professional athletes have used their public voices to push for social progress, Teixeira has spent the last six months making it clear he\u2019s no moderate.<\/p>\n<p>He defended ICE agents on social media after the first civilian was shot in Minnesota, and regularly accused Democrats of stealing elections.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking to the young Republican group last month, Teixeira said that all of the candidates in his GOP primary agree on \u201csecuring the border, growing the economy, shrinking government, lowering taxes, protecting life, protecting the Second Amendment.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But what sets him apart, he said, is his promise to hold fellow Republicans in Congress accountable on social issues where they\u2019ve let Democrats drive the conversation.<\/p>\n<p>Teixeira listed banning biological men from playing women\u2019s sports and requiring proof of citizenship to vote as two issues he can\u2019t imagine that a Republican-controlled House hasn\u2019t tackled yet.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThose are two things that, if I was in Congress right now, I would be hammering every single day,\u201d he told the crowd.<\/p>\n<p>Big shoes to fill<\/p>\n<p>Roy, who is running for Attorney General this year instead of reelection, did not endorse a successor.<\/p>\n<p>At his own campaign rally on Monday, Roy joked that between his seven years working for U.S. Sens. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) and John Cornyn (R-Texas) before running for Congress, \u201cI know the Senate better than most senators,\u201d and was ready for a bigger role.<\/p>\n<p>When <a href=\"https:\/\/sanantonioreport.org\/rep-chip-roy-attorney-general-bid-sets-up-open-race-in-deep-red-tx21\/\" type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/sanantonioreport.org\/rep-chip-roy-attorney-general-bid-sets-up-open-race-in-deep-red-tx21\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Roy announced his plans<\/a> to leave the congressional seat, the race to replace him drew many candidates brought deep political resumes \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/sanantonioreport.org\/profile\/james-trey-trainor-iii-2026-candidate-for-texas-21st-congressional-district\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Trey Trainor<\/a> twice chaired the FEC and <a href=\"https:\/\/sanantonioreport.org\/profile\/michael-wheeler-2026-candidate-for-texas-21st-congressional-district\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Michael Wheeler<\/a> was an adviser to the U.S. Small Business Administration.<\/p>\n<p>But Teixeira blew them out of the water by <a href=\"https:\/\/sanantonioreport.org\/top-fundraisers-for-san-antonio-congressional-races\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">self-funding his campaign<\/a> to the tune of $2.75 million, something GOP leaders hope will keep their party from having to spend resources protecting the district in the general election.<\/p>\n<p>In the wake of a Jan. 30 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.texastribune.org\/2026\/01\/30\/texas-senate-district-9-runoff-rehmet-wambsganss-special-election\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">special election that saw<\/a> a deep-red Fort Worth state Senate seat swing 31 points to support a Democrat in January, Republicans have been eager to wrap up messy primaries \u2014 even in districts that should be safely red.<\/p>\n<p>In the days after that race, President Donald Trump and national outside groups like the <a href=\"https:\/\/sanantonioreport.org\/pac-money-tv-ads-san-antonio-area-congressional-primaries\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Club for Growth came in to help<\/a> Teixeira avoid a runoff.<\/p>\n<p>Former Bexar GOP chair Kyle Sinclair even <a href=\"https:\/\/sanantonioreport.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/K.-Sinclair-Teixeira-Endorsement.pdf?mc_cid=0781a5b953&amp;mc_eid=0e4ffa370a\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">ended his campaign<\/a> to support Trump\u2019s chosen candidate.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis race is at an inflection point,\u201d Sinclair said at the time. \u201cThe right move now is unite behind Mark so we can win TX21 and start governing effectively.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Fresh interest from Democrats<\/p>\n<p>Democrats have also been adjusting their strategy to make a play for deep-red seats, and held a forum to interview their own three primary candidates in February.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"780\" height=\"520\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/TX21-Dem-Forum_jn_15.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-5430068\"  \/>Candidate Regina Vanburg (D) answers a question during a TX21 candidate forum put on by the Bexar County Democratic Party at Kinected Coworking on Saturday, Feb. 7, 2026 in San Antonio, Texas. Norris for the San Antonio Report<\/p>\n<p>The district stretches from <a href=\"https:\/\/directory.texastribune.org\/districts\/us-house\/21\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Northwest San Antonio<\/a> up to the Hill Country to pull in some of the most conservative parts of the state.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Under new boundaries, it would have given Trump<a href=\"https:\/\/www.texastribune.org\/2025\/08\/18\/texas-redistricting-maps-charts-analysis\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">\u00a060.2% of its vote<\/a>\u00a0in 2024 \u2014 similar to how it performed under the existing lines.<\/p>\n<p>But redistricting <a href=\"https:\/\/sanantonioreport.org\/43-percent-bexar-county-residents-new-congressional-district\/\" type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/sanantonioreport.org\/43-percent-bexar-county-residents-new-congressional-district\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">made it a more San Antonio-centric seat<\/a>, leaving some local Democrats eager to put up a fight for it in 2026.<\/p>\n<p>On Tuesday, Democrats renominated their 2024 candidate, <a href=\"https:\/\/sanantonioreport.org\/profile\/kristin-hook-2026-candidate-for-texas-21st-congressional-district\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\"> Hook,<\/a> a former scientist for the NIH who worked for U.S. Sen.
