Winter sports enthusiasts<\/a> in California can finally jump with excitement as a new forecast predicts record-breaking snowfall<\/a> in states across the Southwest US.<\/p>\n

According to OpenSnow\u2019s newly released 2026\u20132027 Winter Forecast Preview<\/a>, a developing El Ni\u00f1o pattern<\/a> is setting the stage for an above-average snowfall season across California and Nevada, with the heaviest storm cycles expected to ramp up after the new year.<\/p>\n

While all California mountain ranges stand to benefit from the active storm track, data indicates that the Central Sierra holds the highest statistical probability for well-above-average snow accumulation. <\/p>\n

Destinations like Mammoth Mountain<\/a> and China Peak<\/a> sit squarely in the bullseye of the strongest forecast signals, according to OpenSnow.<\/p>\n

A developing El Ni\u00f1o pattern is setting the stage for an above-average snowfall season across California and Nevada. X\/@Opensnow<\/p>\n

Meteorologist Alan Smith said the developing \u201csuper El Ni\u00f1o\u201d played a significant role in shaping OpenSnow\u2019s winter forecast, which draws on historical strong El Ni\u00f1o winters, oceanic and atmospheric conditions and seasonal climate models.<\/p>\n

Northern California and the Tahoe region<\/a> are also projected to lean warmer than average. While warmer atmospheric rivers could push snow levels higher during certain storm fronts, forecasters do not expect extreme warmth matching last season\u2019s historic highs.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are projecting above-normal precipitation across a large portion of the US, including the West Coast, Southwest, Southern Plains, Southeast and East Coast as strong El Ni\u00f1os favor an active southern storm track,\u201d Smith said.<\/p>\n

With below-normal snowfall favored along the northern US border and across western Canada, the Southwest and California could turn out to be North America\u2019s premier snow destinations for the 2026\u20132027 season.<\/p>\n

\u201cSoCal ski resorts such as Mountain High and Snow Summit also tend to see disproportionately higher snowfall in El Ni\u00f1o winters (especially strong ones) compared to neutral or La Ni\u00f1a winters,\u201d Smith added.<\/p>\n

Forecasters highlighted that strong El Ni\u00f1o events don\u2019t always guarantee a \u201crecord-breaking\u201d winter everywhere. <\/p>\n

The last major \u201csuper El Ni\u00f1o\u201d during the 2015\u20132016 season famously failed to deliver the historic snow totals that many anticipated for the Tahoe region, ultimately finishing near seasonal averages and below average in Southern California.<\/p>\n
