{"id":67072,"date":"2026-08-18T10:34:19","date_gmt":"2026-08-18T10:34:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/news\/67072\/"},"modified":"2026-08-18T10:34:19","modified_gmt":"2026-08-18T10:34:19","slug":"judge-stops-fbi-headquarters-relocation-to-dc-office-building","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/news\/67072\/","title":{"rendered":"Judge stops FBI headquarters relocation to DC office building"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A U.S. judge on Monday blocked <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/maryland-sues-trump-administration-fbi-headquarters-c74031158869265ed07672a3238db3e3\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">plans to move the FBI\u2019s headquarters<\/a> to a federal office building in Washington, finding that President Donald Trump\u2019s administration illegally tossed out a previously approved plan to build a new facility nearby in Maryland. <\/p>\n<p>The ruling is the latest development in a yearslong battle over where to house the main office for the nation\u2019s premier law enforcement agency. A site in Greenbelt, Maryland, <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/fbi-headquarters-maryland-virginia-9af3e4cf2b58fc6d44ccea6816bdee0c\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">was picked during former President Joe Biden\u2019s administration<\/a>, but Trump appointees sought to <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/fbi-headquarters-patel-usaid-a62e3d059b62fe9407f66f8a59118a41\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">reverse that decision<\/a> last year in favor of repurposing the Ronald Reagan Building, a federal office complex a few blocks from the FBI\u2019s existing headquarters. <\/p>\n<p>U.S. District Judge Theodore D. Chuang, an appointee of President Barack Obama, ruled that the move was \u201c <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/storage.courtlistener.com\/recap\/gov.uscourts.mdd.594118\/gov.uscourts.mdd.594118.32.0.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">not in accordance with law<\/a>,\u201d and <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/storage.courtlistener.com\/recap\/gov.uscourts.mdd.594118\/gov.uscourts.mdd.594118.33.0.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">blocked the Trump administration<\/a> from moving the FBI to the Reagan building, renovating it for the FBI or repurposing funds. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is not the first time courts have tried to undermine the administration in its goal to make government more cost-effective for American taxpayers,\u201d the FBI said in a statement. \u201cThe court has chosen to impermissibly intervene for political reasons. This FBI is mission focused and will continue the best course of action to meet the needs of law enforcement.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The suit was brought by the state of Maryland and Prince George\u2019s County. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cMaryland and Prince George\u2019s County committed more than a decade of work to earn the FBI headquarters and pledged hundreds of millions of dollars,\u201d Maryland Attorney General Anthony Brown, a Democrat, said in a statement. \u201cBy blocking the Trump Administration\u2019s unlawful attempt to move the FBI to the Reagan Building and divert the funds Congress set aside for this project, the Court has cleared the path back to Greenbelt.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Maryland Gov. Wes Moore, also a Democrat, said, \u201cNow it is time to stop the games and get to work building the world-class FBI headquarters that our public servants deserve, where it belongs: in Prince George\u2019s County, Maryland.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The FBI\u2019s current Pennsylvania Avenue headquarters, the <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/gsa-federal-buildings-doge-fbi-doj-aa123e9c3b12e38c8fa511c2a727f880\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">J. Edgar Hoover Building<\/a>, was dedicated in 1975.
