Bomb threats disrupt Wheatland schools for second straight day<\/p>\n

\"Cecil<\/a>WHEATLAND, Calif. \u2014<\/p>\n

For the second day in a row, bomb threats disrupted schools in Wheatland, California, with investigators saying the calls were made using an artificial intelligence-generated voice. <\/p>\n

Both threats were deemed as “hoax” according to the Wheatland Police Department.<\/p>\n

Bear River Middle School canceled classes entirely on Wednesday, while Wheatland Union High School had a delayed start.<\/p>\n

Multiple law enforcement agencies including the Yuba County Sheriff’s Office, Placer County Sheriff’s Office, Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office, California Highway Patrol, and FBI were called to assist Wheatland Police.<\/p>\n

Wheatland Police Chief Michael Garlock says explosive detection dogs from outside agencies were used to extensively inspect inside and outside of both campuses.<\/p>\n

“We had to take precautions to make sure the campuses were clear of any kind of dangerous devices, so we’ve just completed that,” said Chief Garlock Wednesday morning.<\/p>\n

Paul Deniz an cyberthreat expert from Vision Quest Cyber in Sacramento County explained the potential risks of AI-generated threats. “It’s not necessarily a fake threat because it’s AI,” the expert said. Deniz added, “The most important thing is to take this threat as a real threat. Investigate it but understand we need to have awareness around it because it’s just going to become more and more popular.” <\/p>\n

In response to the incidents, Wheatland school districts announced new security measures, including overnight security at all campuses, site sweeps and video reviews each morning, and additional patrols by local law enforcement agencies throughout the day and night. <\/p>\n

District leaders stated that both schools plan to operate as normal on Thursday.<\/p>\n
