We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.<\/p>\n<p>Your support makes all the difference.Read more<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/world\/americas\/us-politics\/trump-midterm-elections-national-emergency-b3034369.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Donald Trump\u2019s ongoing crusade<\/a> to prove he \u201cwon\u201d the 2020 presidential election now relies on a dubious <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/world\/americas\/us-politics\/census-rules-immigration-trump-change-b2803675.html\" title=\"Trump demands new census using \u20182024 election information\u2019 and to weed out migrants in population totals\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Census Bureau<\/a> report that claims thousands of noncitizens \u201cvoted illegally.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The unauthored, seven-page <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.census.gov\/library\/publications\/2026\/dir\/noncitizen-voting-in-the-2020-election.html\">report<\/a> posted on his <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/truthsocial.com\/@realDonaldTrump\/posts\/117118475271319244\">Truth Social<\/a> account this week doesn\u2019t appear to come from the bureau\u2019s own career civil servants but from people affiliated with the Trump-linked <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/world\/americas\/us-politics\/trump-america-first-policy-institute-project-2025-b2644777.html\">America First Policy Institute <\/a>think tank, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2026\/08\/19\/nx-s1-5938799\/trump-census-bureau-noncitizen-voting\">NPR discovered.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Trump claimed that an analysis of 128 million voter records \u201cproves that over 24,000 Noncitizens voted illegally\u201d and that the final number will \u201cexplode\u201d after the bureau finishes processing 32 million other votes. \u201cI WON THE ELECTION!\u201d he wrote.<\/p>\n<p>Election law experts say the analysis relies on shoddy and opaque methodology that doesn\u2019t even reach the conclusion that Trump thinks it does. The report \u201cfails the laugh test,\u201d according to David Becker, executive director of the Center for Election Innovation and Research.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe administration does not provide a sufficient explanation of how it arrived at these numbers \u2014 and for good reason,\u201d he said in a statement shared with The Independent.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/1787354183_273_download...jpeg\"  loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"The Trump administration is touring a dubious report from the Census Bureau to elevate his claims that he won the 2020 election\" class=\"sc-1mc30lb-0 ggpMaE inline-gallery-btn\"\/>The Trump administration is touring a dubious report from the Census Bureau to elevate his claims that he won the 2020 election (AP)<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCensus data cannot be reliably matched to public voter data, as it lacks any unique matching identifiers to compare to those public voter records,\u201d he said. \u201cAny possible effort to \u2018match\u2019 such data would result in large numbers of false matches.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In a statement celebrating the report, America First Policy Institute said it \u201cmaintains that maximizing transparency is a critical step to restoring confidence in our elections.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The president, who continues to baselessly insist the 2020 election was \u201crigged\u201d and \u201cstolen\u201d from him, has increasingly turned to the issue of \u201c<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/world\/americas\/us-politics\/trump-election-loss-results-b2630244.html\">noncitizen voting<\/a>\u201d in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/world\/americas\/us-politics\/trump-citizenship-list-mail-in-ballots-b2998693.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">his attempts to seize control of election administration.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Trump appears to be pushing the Census report to support the Senate passage of his sweeping <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/world\/americas\/us-politics\/house-vote-save-act-voter-id-b2731102.html\">SAVE America Act<\/a> after federal courts have largely blocked his executive orders imposing nationwide voter ID and restricting the use of mail-in ballots that election officials and voting rights groups argue would bring <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/world\/americas\/us-politics\/trump-mail-in-ballots-supreme-court-chaos-b3027354.html\">chaos to midterm election planning.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Trump and administration officials have touted recent prosecutions of noncitizen voting as evidence of the scale of the alleged problem while accusing Democrats of either ignoring the issue or denying it exists. Election officials and Democrats have not denied ineligible ballots have been cast; those voters are frequently caught and prosecuted.<\/p>\n<p>Assuming the numbers cited by Trump are accurate, 24,000 votes out of 128 million would represent less than .02 percent of all votes cast in 2020 \u2014 still far below the threshold to tip the scales for Trump\u2019s victory. Joe Biden won by more than 7 million votes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is good to see the administration now admit that these numbers are so small that they could not have altered the outcome of the 2020 election,\u201d Becker said. \u201cAll of the numbers cited in the Census analysis are smaller than the margins of victory in each state and would not have been enough to change the winner of any state in 2020.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/8OCENbpZCFOaQMcT-ez4GjHvSsOGa5yzN_giO9qLuQCCmfelROHHpHcSIqUmnEWdpEGUY6BeQjuBqmWWfgICJECqOfRqXv__mpkU.jpeg\"  loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"Trump is pushing the report as he demands Senate passage of his SAVE America Act to implement nationwide voter ID and sweeping restrictions on mail-in ballots\" class=\"sc-1mc30lb-0 ggpMaE inline-gallery-btn\"\/>Trump is pushing the report as he demands Senate passage of his SAVE America Act to implement nationwide voter ID and sweeping restrictions on mail-in ballots (Reuters)<\/p>\n<p>Michael Morse, an assistant professor at the University of Pennsylvania&#8217;s law school, told NPR that the Census brief\u2019s \u201clack of transparency makes it difficult to pin down each problem or trust any explanation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRegardless, the estimated rate of apparent noncitizen voting is both a tiny fraction of total votes \u2026 and entirely consistent with both types of error,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>The 2020 Census didn\u2019t even collect information about citizenship status, and the bureau \u201cdoes not have a comprehensive individual \u2018citizenship records\u2019 file to definitively match against voter rolls,\u201d according to Omar Noureldin, senior vice president of policy and litigation strategy at Common Cause.<\/p>\n<p>The types of data used in its report \u201care modeled population estimates, not evidence that 24,000 people voted illegally,\u201d <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/OmarCommonCause\/status\/2089866912431996956\">he noted.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Still, the Trump administration has pointed to several recent wider noncitizen voting scandals <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/world\/americas\/us-politics\/trump-fact-check-election-speech-b3016584.html\" title=\"What do Trump\u2019s declassified election conspiracy documents show \u2014 and how much was known already?\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">as evidence of a pervasive scheme.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>New Jersey officials recently disclosed they had inadvertently registered thousands of noncitizens to vote because of a software error. Roughly 400 of those noncitizens cast ballots, according to the state.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/1787354188_738_download.-1..jpeg\"  loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"Election law experts said the Census analysis uses shoddy methodology to draw a conclusion that still doesn\u2019t prove that Trump would have won in 2020\" class=\"sc-1mc30lb-0 ggpMaE inline-gallery-btn\"\/>Election law experts said the Census analysis uses shoddy methodology to draw a conclusion that still doesn\u2019t prove that Trump would have won in 2020 (AP)<\/p>\n<p>In <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/world\/americas\/us-politics\/trump-fact-check-election-speech-b3016584.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">a speech from the White House last month<\/a>, Trump alleged without evidence that the Department of Homeland Security discovered 250,000 noncitizens on voter rolls in four states. <\/p>\n<p>Those states \u2014 California, Nevada, New Jersey and Pennsylvania \u2014 have disputed the alleged findings and asked the administration for more details, which have not yet been disclosed.<\/p>\n<p>The Justice Department, meanwhile, has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/world\/americas\/us-politics\/trump-midterm-elections-national-emergency-b3034369.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">lost more than 20 lawsuits in its efforts to collect voter information.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The administration claims it needs those records to ensure that states are adhering to federal laws that require voter registration records be up to date and accurate.
