{"id":69239,"date":"2026-08-23T07:28:12","date_gmt":"2026-08-23T07:28:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/news\/69239\/"},"modified":"2026-08-23T07:28:12","modified_gmt":"2026-08-23T07:28:12","slug":"frustration-mounts-for-thousands-still-without-power-after-deadly-indiana-storms","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/news\/69239\/","title":{"rendered":"Frustration mounts for thousands still without power after deadly Indiana storms"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Like so many in Gary, Indiana, Shatiya Hardin has been waiting for the minute her power finally turns back on.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s been absolutely horrible,&#8221; Hardin told CBS News. &#8220;At night we&#8217;re sweating, we&#8217;re irritable, we have children to look out for, elderly people who need electricity for oxygen tanks.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Beginning Aug. 11, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/indiana-floods-white-river-evacuations-rescues\/\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">several days of powerful storms<\/a> walloped northwest Indiana, killing at least seven people and displacing about 1,000. The storms <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/indiana-white-river-flooding-record-emergency\/\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">brought record rainfall <\/a>that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/floodwaters-submerge-midwest-neighborhoods-bracing-more-severe-storms\/\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">flooded several communities<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/chicago\/news\/gary-indiana-residents-power-out-until-next-week\/\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">In Gary<\/a>, the storm <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/chicago\/news\/northwest-indiana-power-outages-nipsco-severe-storms-august-2026\/\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">knocked out electricity<\/a> for more than half of the city&#8217;s residents, where about one in three people lives in poverty, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.census.gov\/quickfacts\/fact\/table\/garycityindiana\/PST045225\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">according to<\/a> U.S. Census data. <\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s not OK for us to continually be in survival mode,&#8221; said Hardin. &#8220;We don&#8217;t have service in this area at all whatsoever. At the height of the storms, 374,500 customers had no electricity.<\/p>\n<p>On Thursday, Indiana Gov. Mike Braun requested an expedited major disaster declaration from FEMA for 54 counties. He estimates losses from the storm and its aftermath could top $5 billion. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;If granted, this declaration will mean significantly more resources to accelerate Indiana&#8217;s recovery from the recent severe weather,&#8221; Braun <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/GovBraun\/status\/2090799591805407700\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">wrote<\/a> on social media.<\/p>\n<p>Many residents in Gary have been relying on a community center for hot meals, air conditioning and a chance to charge their phones.<\/p>\n<p>A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/chicago\/news\/nipsco-class-action-lawsuit-northwest-indiana-power-outage\/\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">class-action lawsuit<\/a> was filed this week against NIPSCO, alleging the company failed to proactively trim back vegetation from power lines.
