{"id":69302,"date":"2026-08-23T12:12:14","date_gmt":"2026-08-23T12:12:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/news\/69302\/"},"modified":"2026-08-23T12:12:14","modified_gmt":"2026-08-23T12:12:14","slug":"no-more-trump-lashes-out-after-us-canada-talks-devolve-into-trade-war-canada","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/news\/69302\/","title":{"rendered":"\u2018No more!!!\u2019: Trump lashes out after US-Canada talks devolve into trade war | Canada"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">Donald Trump has hit back at Canada after a breakdown in negotiations <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2026\/aug\/22\/canada-tariffs-trump-trade-deal-talks-fail\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">plunged the two countries into a trade war<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">In his first public comments since negotiations collapsed on Friday in Washington, the US president wrote on social media: \u201cCanada wants the benefits of being a State, without being one!!!\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">\u201cThey have also charged our great farmers, for many years, massive amounts of tariffs,\u201d he added. \u201cNo more!!!\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">His comments came after the US imposed 50% tariffs on $20bn (\u00a314.6bn) worth of Canadian goods, while <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/mark-carney\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Mark Carney<\/a>, the country\u2019s prime minister, has vowed to match them \u201cdollar for dollar\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">The US tariffs came into force on Saturday, ranging from hockey sticks to tongue depressors. He told Fox &amp; Friends Weekend: \u201cWe\u2019ve said enough and so we\u2019ve taken countermeasures. Our interest is in protecting American workers and protecting American supply chains.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">Carney, who previously served as the governor of the Bank of England, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2025\/mar\/09\/mark-carney-to-be-next-canada-pm-after-winning-liberal-leadership-race\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">was elected as Canada\u2019s prime minister last year<\/a> after campaigning to lead a fightback against Trump, who has previously suggested he wants to make Canada a 51st state with \u201ceconomic force\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">Carney\u2019s \u201cdollar for dollar\u201d tariffs are expected to take effect from 8 September, with new levies on steel, dairy, appliances and electronics. The escalation has also called into question the future of the North American trade pact between the US, Canada and Mexico, known as USMCA.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">The pact, which was signed by Trump during his first term, governs about $2tn annually in goods and services between the three countries.
