As a budding trade war between the U.S. and Canada sparks a round of cross-border insults, the leader of Canada’s largest province told CBS News he’s hopeful that Canadian officials and President Trump’s team can reach an agreement \u2014 but cautioned that “no deal is better than a bad deal.”<\/p>\n
“He’s treating us like we’re Communist China here,” Ontario Premier Doug Ford told CBS News chief Washington correspondent Major Garrett, when discussing Mr. Trump’s trade strategy with the U.S.’s northern neighbor. “We’re the closest friends and allies that the U.S. has anywhere in the entire world, and I want to keep it that way.”<\/p>\n
Talks between the two countries ended last week without a trade deal, leading the Trump administration to follow through on its threats to impose 50% tariffs on some $20 billion worth of Canadian goods. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney vowed to retaliate<\/a> “dollar for dollar” with his own 50% tariffs<\/a> on certain U.S. goods starting on Sept. 8.<\/p>\n Meanwhile, Ford and Mr. Trump have slung invectives at each other in recent days. Mr. Trump called Ford<\/a> “unimpressive” and a “flunky” of Carney, who belongs to a different political party but has drawn support from the Ontario premier. Ford, for his part, has called the U.S. president<\/a> a “dictator” and said: “I have a lot of real estate on my a**, so he has a lot of room to kiss my a**.”<\/p>\n Mr. Trump said Tuesday<\/a> he’s considering renaming Lake Ontario to “Lake America” because “we don’t expect to be doing much business with Ontario any longer.”<\/p>\n Said Ford: “I have to laugh when he comes up with these ideas. It’s always going to be Lake Ontario here in Canada. \u2026 If he wants to name it Lake America, Lake Trump, whatever he wants to do, that’s his prerogative.”<\/p>\n The dispute could threaten billions in annual trade<\/a> between the U.S. and its second-largest trading partner. Mr. Trump earlier this week threatened further tariffs<\/a> on Canadian automotive and steel imports starting next year, once again accusing Canada of unfair trade practices.<\/p>\n Ford called the tariffs an “unprovoked attack on Canadians.” But he also said he’s hopeful that “everyone comes to their senses and we have a fair deal for both countries,” and he wants Canada to keep exporting energy and raw materials across the border.<\/p>\n “[Mr. Trump] can deal with his good buddies, China and Russia, and we’ll see what happens,” Ford said. “But I would rather deal with your closest friend and ally.”<\/p>\n Trump administration officials have blamed Canadian negotiators for the diplomatic collapse, accusing them of tacking on last-minute demands<\/a>, including on tariff relief for heavy trucks<\/a>.<\/p>\n Canadian officials have hit the U.S. with the same allegation. In his interview with CBS News, Ford argued Washington “kept changing the goalposts,” saying: “We thought [we’d] have a deal, then they changed it again and again and again.”\u00a0<\/p>\n Asked if the U.S. made any eleventh-hour demands, Mr. Trump told CNN<\/a>, “that sounds like me.”<\/p>\n With no trade deal in place, Ford argued both countries will face pain<\/a>, especially in sectors with lots of cross-border trade like auto manufacturing. In the past, he has also weighed surcharges on the electricity that Ontario sends to the U.S.<\/p>\n “When you attack your No. 1 customer \u2026 it doesn’t work out very well,” he said.<\/p>\n Ford acknowledged that Canadians will pay a price for the trade war, too. But he argued that Canada \u2014 which has promised aid<\/a> to impacted businesses and workers \u2014 can afford to weather the storm, pointing to the U.S.’s $40 trillion national debt<\/a>.<\/p>\n “It’s going to be pain on both sides of the border,” he said. “It’s going to hurt Americans as much as it’s going to hurt Canadians.
