San Jose police officer critically wounded after being shot by alleged armed robber<\/p>\n

A San Jose police officer was critically wounded, and a suspected armed robber is dead after a shooting south of the city’s downtown area, the police department said.<\/p>\n

The shooting was in the area of Lick Avenue and Goodyear Street. The injured officer was taken to a San Jose-area hospital. NBC affiliate KNTV reports the officer is in critical but stable condition.<\/p>\n

KTVU reports that an alleged armed robber was spotted in a vehicle and brandished a firearm before fleeing. Officers saw the person enter a nearby home, and the person shot at two officers, injuring one of them. Officers returned gunfire, killing the person, who has not yet been identified, at the scene.<\/p>\n

While the person was inside the home, the family who lives inside said their kids and grandkids were taken hostage. They described police breaking through the door and confronting the person.<\/p>\n

“Super grateful for SJPD and their bravery and really protecting our family,” Brett Bymaster said.<\/p>\n

Bymaster said they did not know the person who broke into their home.<\/p>\n

KNTV reported that San Jose Mayor Matt Mahan went to Valley Medical, where the officer is being treated. <\/p>\n
