Bill Lee <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tn.gov\/governor\/news\/2026\/8\/28\/gov--lee-announces-partnership-to-name-nashville-international-airport-in-honor-of-dolly-parton.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">announced<\/a> the intent to name the airport in her honor to create \u201ca lasting tribute to her indelible legacy and the generations of people she inspired across Tennessee and around the world,\u201d they said in a news release. <\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/260828-nashville-airport-ww-1851-16fc12.jpg\" alt=\"Empty lines inside an airport terminal with NASHVILLE TENNESSEE written on the floor.\" height=\"1656\" width=\"2500\"\/>The proposal to rename the airport will be addressed at the Metro Nashville Airport Authority\u2019s meeting on Sept. 17.Seth Herald \/ Getty Images file<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-a806db\" class=\"body-graf\">Lee spoke with Parton\u2019s team about the proposal this week and they expressed \u201ctheir appreciation,\u201d the governor said.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-859d31\" class=\"body-graf\">\u201cDolly Parton\u2019s extraordinary life is forever woven into the fabric of our state,\u201d Lee said. \u201cFrom her rural mountain home in East Tennessee to global stages, Dolly carried the Volunteer Spirit with her. At a place where Tennessee welcomes the world, it is fitting that Nashville International Airport would bear the name of our state\u2019s favorite daughter and greet travelers with the enduring legacy of Dolly\u2019s music, generosity, faith, and kindness.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-4046dc\" class=\"body-graf\">The proposal to rename the airport will be addressed at the Metro Nashville Airport Authority\u2019s meeting Sept. 17.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-2e469b\" class=\"body-graf\">A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.today.com\/popculture\/news\/petition-dolly-parton-nashville-airport-rename-rcna594731\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">petition to rename the airport<\/a> in honor of Parton, which was started more than a year before her death, has over 160,000 signatures as of Friday night and also garnered responses in support from a Nashville City Council member and a Tennesseee state representative. <\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-93c907\" class=\"body-graf\">The \u201cQueen of Country\u201d died surrounded by loved ones following a brief battle with cancer. Her death was felt across the nation and the world, and inspired heartfelt tributes from fans, celebrities and politicians alike. <\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-8204fc\" class=\"endmark body-graf\">Known beyond her music for her extravagant blonde hairdos, Southern charm, wit, generosity and kindness, Parton was beloved by generations.
