The NCAA tournament<\/a> tipped off on Thursday with the emergence of a pair of Cinderella candidates and a close call for the No. 1 overall seed.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, one of the game\u2019s most exciting and promising players played his first and likely last game in the Big Dance. It added up to a day filled with its share of drama and intrigue to tip off the tournament.<\/p>\n

Only 47 games left to go.<\/p>\n

Is Duke OK after close call vs. Siena?<\/p>\n

A poor first half by Duke raised visions of Fairleigh Dickinson<\/a> and UMBC for No. 16 seed Siena<\/a> on Thursday. Alas, there was no first-round collapse by Duke, which rallied from a 47-34 second-half deficit to put Siena away, 71-65<\/a>.<\/p>\n

With the rally, No. 1 overall seed Duke won\u2019t join Virginia and Purdue in ignominious NCAA tournament history as the only No. 1 seeds to fall in the first round to a 16 seed.<\/p>\n

But Thursday\u2019s close call doesn\u2019t exactly inspire confidence around a Duke team<\/a> that entered the NCAA tournament with injury concerns and played shorthanded against Siena. Duke coach Jon Scheyer said after the game he was out-coached by Siena head coach and former Syracuse NCAA tournament star Gerry McNamara.<\/p>\n

\u201cG-mac had his guys way more ready to play than I did,\u201d Scheyer said. \u201cHe out-coached me. He out-coached us. And that\u2019s one of the hardest moments for me in sport \u2014 period. To not have your best stuff.\u201d<\/p>\n

Duke\u2019s starting point guard Caleb Foster and starting center Patrick Ngongba are both sidelined with foot injuries. Ngongba could return to the lineup, but his status for Saturday\u2019s second-round game against TCU is murky at best<\/a>. Foster\u2019s injury is more significant, and he\u2019s only expected to be able to return for the end of a deep Duke run, if at all.<\/p>\n

This leaves Duke down two starters, with a short bench and a seven-man rotation. Nikolas Khamenia and Darren Harris combined for all of Duke\u2019s 33 minutes off the bench Thursday as the starting five carried a heavy load to squeak by a Siena team that finished in third place in the regular season in the MAAC.<\/p>\n

A first-round scare like this can go one of two ways for a No. 1 seed. It can act as a wake-up call to spark a deep tournament run. Or it can be a sign of things to come. How Duke responds against TCU on Saturday will be telling.<\/p>\n

VCU\u2019s historic rally is more disappointment for UNC<\/p>\n

For a second straight season, North Carolina\u2019s season has ended in the first round of the NCAA tournament. This time it featured a historic collapse.<\/p>\n

The sixth-seeded Tar Heels led by as many as 19 points over No. 11 VCU in Thursday\u2019s opening-round game. But the Rams scored 12 straight points and rallied to force overtime for an 82-78 win.<\/p>\n

With the rally, VCU completed the sixth-largest comeback in NCAA tournament history<\/a> and the largest ever in the first round.<\/p>\n

Terrence Hill Jr. gave VCU the lead for good with a 3-pointer with 15.1 seconds remaining in overtime. He finished the game with 34 points while shooting 7 of 10 from 3.<\/p>\n

The win adds up to elation for VCU and frustration for UNC, which has made it past the first weekend of the NCAA tournament just once since head coach Hubert Davis guided the Tar Heels to a Final Four win over Duke and a trip to the 2022 championship game.<\/p>\n

Since then, North Carolina has missed the NCAA tournament, advanced to the Sweet 16 and suffered consecutive first-round tournament losses. And the heat is on for Davis<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Do mid-majors get a fair shake?<\/p>\n

It didn\u2019t take long for Cinderella to enter the building. No. 12 seed High Point rallied from 10 points down on Thursday for an 83-82 thriller over No. 5 seed Wisconsin<\/a> in the first significant upset of tournament.<\/p>\n

It did so behind hot 3-point shooting down the stretch and a go-ahead layup in the final seconds from senior 3-point specialist Chase Johnston for his first made 2-point bucket of the season<\/a>. That\u2019s right. Johnston was previously 0 for 4 from inside the arc in 32 games.<\/p>\n

High point coach Flynn Clayman used the opportunity<\/a> to rail on power conference teams for not scheduling mid-major opponents during the regular season.<\/p>\n

\u201cNobody would play us,\u201d Clayman said. \u201cJust like they wouldn\u2019t play Miami [Ohio]. But they\u2019ve got to play us in this tournament.\u201d<\/p>\n

Mid-majors upsetting power conference teams is not new to the NCAA tournament. But the topic is hot after Miami (Ohio) made the tournament field as an at-large team without any wins over a power conference team. It then backed up its credentials with a win over SMU of the ACC in the First Four.<\/p>\n

If power conference teams won\u2019t schedule mid-majors, how are mid-majors supposed to boost their tournament r\u00e9sum\u00e9s? Clayman wants to know and is calling for change in how power conference teams go about the business of scheduling.<\/p>\n

AJ Dybantsa did his best. But it wasn\u2019t good enough for a hobbled BYU team against Texas.<\/p>\n

The 11th-seeded Longhorns delivered a 79-71 defeat of 6th-seeded and shorthanded Cougars, who were playing without All-Big 12 guard Richie Saunders (ACL).<\/p>\n

Dybantsa tallied 35 points and 10 rebounds in what was largely a one-man show to keep BYU competitive. Robert Wright III (14 points) was the only other Cougar in double figures. Nobody from BYU\u2019s bench scored a single point.<\/p>\n

And that likely spells the beginning and the end of Dybantsa\u2019s NCAA tournament legacy<\/a>. Dybantsa has teased that he\u2019s not sure if he\u2019s actually leaving BYU for the NBA. But nobody really expects him to stay.<\/p>\n

By most accounts, Dybantsa is the No. 2 pick in the upcoming NBA Draft. At worst. And nothing he did on Thursday hurt that stock.<\/p>\n

If he\u2019s done, thus concludes one of the brightest individual runs we\u2019ve seen in college basketball. Dybantsa will be missed in Provo and in the college ranks.<\/p>\n

Nebraska finally wins an NCAA tournament game<\/p>\n

Nebraska entered Thursday as the only power conference program to have never won an NCAA tournament game.<\/p>\n

Thankfully for the Cornhuskers, they can claim that no more. Nebraska, a No. 4 seed, cruised past No. 13 seed Troy<\/a>, 76-47, for its first-ever NCAA tournament win. It\u2019s now 1-8 in NCAA tournament play.<\/p>\n

This is a program that debuted in 1896 and has been around for the entire existence of the NCAA tournament, which was first played in 1939. Nebraska didn\u2019t make its first NCAA tournament until 1986. It lost in the opening round that year and in ensuing first-round games in 1991, 92, 93, 94, 98, 2014 and 2024.<\/p>\n

But now, with the best team in program history under head coach Fred Hoiberg, the Cornhuskers have a strong chance of advancing to the Sweet 16. No. 5 seed Vanderbilt stands in their way in the second round on Saturday.<\/p>\n
