{"id":7543,"date":"2026-03-20T13:16:07","date_gmt":"2026-03-20T13:16:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/news\/7543\/"},"modified":"2026-03-20T13:16:07","modified_gmt":"2026-03-20T13:16:07","slug":"iran-hits-kuwaiti-oil-refinery-as-israel-renews-attacks-on-tehran-conflict-news","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/news\/7543\/","title":{"rendered":"Iran hits Kuwaiti oil refinery as Israel renews attacks on Tehran | Conflict News"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Drones have struck <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/where\/kuwait\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Kuwait\u2019s<\/a> largest oil refinery for the second day as Iran launched a sweeping assault on energy infrastructure across the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/tag\/israel-iran-conflict\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Gulf<\/a>, while explosions boomed over Tehran from Israeli attacks as the country marked the Persian New Year.<\/p>\n<p>Fires broke out across multiple units at the Mina al-Ahmadi refinery, which processes about 730,000 barrels of oil per day, early on Friday morning, as Kuwaitis marked <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/opinions\/2026\/3\/20\/eid-under-siege-little-to-celebrate-in-gaza-as-israel-tightens-chokehold\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Eid al-Fitr<\/a>, the celebration ending the holy month of Ramadan.<\/p>\n<p>Recommended Stories list of 2 itemsend of list<\/p>\n<p>Kuwait\u2019s national oil company said several units had been shut down, though there were no casualties.<\/p>\n<p>The country\u2019s military said its air defences were actively intercepting incoming missile and drone threats.<\/p>\n<p>The strikes form part of a broadening Iranian campaign against Gulf Arab states, launched in retaliation for an Israeli strike earlier this week on Iran\u2019s South Pars gasfield, the country\u2019s largest, supplying about 80 percent of its domestic natural gas needs.<\/p>\n<p>Iran\u2019s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) said they had also hit United States forces at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/where\/united-arab-emirates\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">UAE\u2019s<\/a> al-Dhafra airbase, as well as sites inside Israel.<\/p>\n<p>The UAE reported incoming missile and drone threats, while Bahrain said shrapnel from what it called \u201cIranian aggression\u201d sparked a warehouse fire. Saudi Arabia said its forces had intercepted and destroyed more than a dozen drones within the space of two hours.<\/p>\n<p>Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi warned this week that the strikes on Gulf infrastructure represented \u201ca fraction\u201d of the country\u2019s capabilities, and threatened \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2026\/3\/19\/iran-attacks-cut-17-of-qatars-lng-capacity-for-up-to-5-years-qatarenergy\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">zero restraint<\/a>\u201d should Iran\u2019s own energy facilities come under attack again.<\/p>\n<p>Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, meanwhile, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/liveblog\/2026\/3\/19\/iran-war-live-qatar-saudi-energy-sites-attacked-riyadh-says-trust-gone?update=4417930\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">said<\/a> Israel had acted alone in striking South Pars and would hold off further attacks on energy infrastructure at the request of US President Donald Trump, who had distanced himself from the strike.<\/p>\n<p>Qatar\u2019s Ras Laffan, the world\u2019s largest liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminal, sustained severe damage in Iranian attacks, wiping out roughly 17 percent of global LNG supply and costing an estimated $20bn in annual revenue.<\/p>\n<p>QatarEnergy chief Saad al-Kaabi said repairs could take between three and five years, and that the scale of destruction had set the region back \u201c10 to 20 years\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Iran has also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2026\/3\/18\/how-iran-defied-trump-threats-to-emerge-as-strait-of-hormuz-gatekeeper\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">closed<\/a> the Strait of Hormuz, through which about a fifth of the world\u2019s oil and LNG passes, sending energy prices surging and squeezing supplies of everything from computer chips to fertiliser.<\/p>\n<p>Governments across Asia are already rationing electricity and cutting office hours.<\/p>\n<p>Mujtaba Rahman, managing director at political risk consultancy Eurasia Group, told Al Jazeera the conflict appeared to be entering \u201can escalatory phase\u201d, warning that Asia and Europe faced the heaviest exposure depending on \u201chow long the war continues\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Al Jazeera\u2019s correspondent in Dubai, Zein Basravi,\u00a0 said Gulf leaders were \u201ctrying to maintain some kind of poise as these attacks escalate\u201d, but it was becoming increasingly hard to see how the situation could continue \u201cwithout some kind of breaking point\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Israel launched further attacks on Iran overnight. The sound of explosions was heard in Tehran as Iranians marked Nowruz, the Persian New Year. No further details were immediately available.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, sirens sounded on Friday morning in central Israel, including in the capital of Tel Aviv, due to a second Iranian missile barrage within an hour, the Israeli army said.<\/p>\n<p>Air defence systems were trying to intercept the missiles, the army said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">The spokesman for Iran\u2019s paramilitary IRGC insisted on Friday that Tehran was still building missiles, seeking to counter a claim by Netanyahu that it no longer could.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Ali Mohammad Naeini also said the Iran war would go on. A short time later, Iranian state television reported Naeini was killed in an air strike.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cThese people expect the war to continue until the enemy is completely exhausted,\u201d the general said of the Iranian public. \u201cThis war must end when the shadow of war is lifted from the country.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">On Friday, Israel also broadened its attacks to Syria, saying it hit infrastructure there in response to attacks on the minority Druze population in southern Suwayda province. Syria\u2019s state-run SANA news agency did not immediately acknowledge the attack.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Israel, which has a significant Druze population, has previously intervened in defence of the Druze in Syria, launching dozens of air attacks on convoys of government fighters and even striking the Syrian Ministry of Defence headquarters in central Damascus.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">More than 1,300 people in Iran have been killed during the war. Israeli strikes against the Hezbollah group in Lebanon have displaced more than 1 million people, according to the Lebanese government, which says more than 1,000 people have been killed. Israel says it has killed more than 500 Hezbollah fighters.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">In Israel, 15 people have been killed by Iranian missile fire.
