Shares of Arm (ARM<\/a>) rocketed more than 15% higher in early trading Wednesday, after the company unveiled its first production data center processor: the Arm AGI CPU (central processing unit).<\/p>\n

Arm has traditionally licensed its intellectual property to other companies to develop their own chips, including Apple and Nvidia (NVDA<\/a>), which uses Arm\u2019s capabilities in its Grace and Vera CPUs.<\/p>\n

Graphics processing units, or GPUs, have dominated data centers thanks to their ability to train and run AI models. But as running those models becomes a more common use case than training and as the industry transitions toward agentic applications \u2014 AI that can perform tasks on your behalf \u2014 CPUs are becoming more important.<\/p>\n

That provides Arm with the opportunity to launch its own processor. The company isn\u2019t just debuting a chip, though; it\u2019s also unveiling a server rack to run them at scale.<\/p>\n

And while X86-based chips like those from Intel (INTC<\/a>) and Advanced Micro Devices (AMD<\/a>) generally dominate data centers, Arm said its CPU delivers twice the performance per rack compared to those other platforms.<\/p>\n

Arm said it co-developed the AGI CPU with Meta (META<\/a>), which is deploying them alongside its own custom chips inside its data centers.<\/p>\n

Beyond Meta, Arm said it\u2019s also working with Cerebras, Cloudflare (NET<\/a>), F5 (FFIV<\/a>), OpenAI (OPAI.PVT<\/a>), Positron (POSC<\/a>), Rebellions, SAP (SAP<\/a>), and SK Telecom (SKM<\/a>), which will use the chip for agentic AI applications, among others.<\/p>\n

Despite Wall Street\u2019s exhuberance for Arm\u2019s new chip, BofA Global Research analyst Vivek Arya pointed out in a note to investors that the company is far from the only CPU game in town.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe highlight the CPU market is getting very crowded. Incumbents in both x86 and ARM have much wider breadths of portfolio and established software\/ecosystem, catering to enterprise\/telco customers,\u201d he wrote.<\/p>\n

\u201cHyperscalers have their own customized CPUs, while [Arm\u2019s] key customers Meta\/OpenAI also have existing CPU agreements with AMD\/NVDA, leaving limited opp’ty for the AGI CPU. Moreover, the bigger AI grows, the more pressure [Arm\u2019s] smartphone\/consumer markets would have from limited memory supplies.\u201d<\/p>\n

Earlier this month, Meta and Nvidia announced an expanded deal<\/a> in which Nvidia will provide the social media giant with the largest deployment of its Grace CPU-only servers to date.<\/p>\n

Then just last week, AMD announced its own deal with Meta<\/a>, which includes servers running the company\u2019s Venice and next-generation Verano CPUs.<\/p>\n

And during Intel\u2019s Jan. 22 earnings call, CEO Lip-Bu Tan cited AI as a major driver for CPU demand<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe continuing proliferation and diversification of AI workloads is placing significant capacity constraints on traditional and new hardware infrastructure, reinforcing the growing and essential role CPUs play in the AI era,\u201d Tan said.<\/p>\n

At Nvidia\u2019s GTC event last week, CEO Jensen Huang spotlighted the company\u2019s upcoming Vera CPU, which he said will launch as part of a server rack to power agentic AI applications.<\/p>\n

The interest in CPUs doesn\u2019t mean GPUs are going anywhere. The heavy-hitting processors are still necessary for running high-end AI models and will continue to do so for the foreseeable future.<\/p>\n
