Loyola University Chicago\u2019s student newspaper is facing backlash for apologizing for its coverage of freshman Sheridan Gorman\u2019s murder<\/a> \u2014 because editors labeled the alleged murderer an \u201cillegal immigrant.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Loyola Phoenix originally reported \u2014 accurately \u2014 on\u00a0accused killer Jose Medina-Medina<\/a>\u2018s status as an illegal alien after he was charged on Monday with the\u00a0execution of 18-year-old Gorman<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cImmigrant man charged in murder of Sheridan Gorman, DHS involved,\u201d the\u00a0student paper\u2019s headline originally read<\/a>, referring to Venezuelan national Medina-Medina, 25, as an \u201cillegal immigrant.\u201d<\/p>\n

Jose Medina-Medina, 25, an illegal Venezuelan migrant, is accused of murdering a college freshman. DHS<\/p>\n

But the Phoenix later edited its story to describe Medina-Medina as a \u201cRogers Park Resident,\u201d in reference to the Chicago neighborhood where Loyola\u2019s main campus is located \u2014 and where Gorman was walking with friends when she was shot dead early Thursday.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat headline didn\u2019t reflect the most important elements in the story, and it was taken down minutes later to prevent any further harm to affected community members,\u201d the newspaper said in a lengthy editor\u2019s note on the article.<\/p>\n

\u201cAdditionally, in the body of the original post, we described the man who was charged as an \u2018illegal immigrant,\u2019 using language provided by the Department of Homeland Security. That language does not align with Associated Press style, nor does it align with the values of this newspaper,\u201d the editor\u2019s note continued.<\/p>\n

\u201cNo human\u2019s existence is illegal, and we quickly changed our wording to reflect that,\u201d the student newspaper wrote, despite noting in its article that Medina-Medina \u201cwas living in the United States illegally,\u201d according to the DHS.<\/p>\n

The college newspaper\u2019s U-turn has sparked a furious response from many.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf I were her parents this would send me over the edge!\u201d one\u00a0X user wrote<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cNo dystopian could conjure the college-aged left as they are now. They surpass parody,\u201d\u00a0wrote another X user<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cApologizing to murderers. How typically woke,\u201d added a third\u00a0X user<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The Loyola Phoenix did not respond immediately to requests for comment.<\/p>\n

Woke Dems in Chicago have been accused of rushing to excuse Gorman\u2019s alleged killer of culpability for the murder.<\/p>\n

Chicago Alderwoman\u00a0Maria Hadden was slammed<\/a>\u00a0for suggesting on Monday that Gorman was \u201cin the wrong place at the wrong time,\u201d even claiming outrageously that Medina-Medina may have been \u201cstartled\u201d when he allegedly shot the teenager.<\/p>\n

Gorman was reportedly masked at the time when he allegedly approached her and her friends and shot her in the head while the group walked along the Chicago lakefront.<\/p>\n

Hadden, a progressive ally of Chicago\u2019s mayor, apologized on Tuesday evening, before blaming the \u201cconservative media\u201d for \u201cmisconstruing\u201d her words.<\/p>\n

On Tuesday, Mayor\u00a0Brandon Johnson refused to apologize<\/a>\u00a0to Gorman\u2019s parents for promoting sanctuary city policies, which allowed Medina-Medina to be in Chicago at the time.<\/p>\n

The White House has blamed border and sanctuary policies in sanctuary cities such as Chicago for the murder of Gorman.<\/p>\n

Medina-Medina was allegedly previously stopped at the border in 2023 but\u00a0released twice under President Joe Biden\u2019s administration<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cA preventable tragedy. Sheridan Gorman was murdered by an illegal alien released into the U.S. in 2023 under the Biden administration \u2014 a direct result of failed border & sanctuary city policies,\u201d the\u00a0White House said in a post on X<\/a>\u00a0on Tuesday.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Trump Admin is working hard to prevent tragedies like this from happening again. Prayers are with her loved ones,\u201d the post concluded.<\/p>\n

Gorman\u2019s parents<\/a>, from Yorktown Heights, New York, paid a heart-rending tribute to their daughter on Sunday.<\/p>\n
