Nearly two months passed before Gov.\u00a0Ron DeSantis\u00a0called the election in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/floridapolitics.com\/archives\/762247-gov-desantis-calls-special-election-for-house-district-87-in-palm-beach-county\/\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">late October<\/a>, a delay that\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/cbs12.com\/news\/local\/candidate-files-lawsuit-to-force-governor-ron-desantis-to-call-special-election-in-palm-beach-county-palm-beach-county-circuit-court-by-emily-gregory-october-7-2025\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer nofollow\">prompted Gregory to sue<\/a>, arguing voters were being denied representation.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">While the lawsuit became moot once DeSantis scheduled the contest, the lag meant residents had no voice in Tallahassee during the 2026 Legislative Session.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The race in days leading up to the Special Election garnered national attention, thanks to a perception it was the most likely red-to-blue flip among three legislative Special Elections in Florida on Tuesday. It also drew press when Trump cast his ballot <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/politics\/2026\/03\/23\/trump-mail-in-voting-florida\/\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer nofollow\">through the mail<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.flhouse.gov\/FileStores\/Web\/District\/DistrictMaps\/large\/HD_87_Large.pdf\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer nofollow\">HD 87<\/a>\u00a0\u2014 which runs up the coast through Palm Beach Gardens, Jupiter, Juno Beach and Hypoluxo \u2014 has trended reliably Republican in recent cycles. She is also an Army spouse.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.emilygregoryforflorida.com\/\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer nofollow\">Her platform<\/a>\u00a0centered on increasing public education funding, expanding access to health care and addressing rising property insurance and housing costs.<\/p>\n<p>During her campaign, she drew a sharp distinction with Republicans on tax policy, opposing efforts to eliminate property taxes, which she argued would shift the burden onto renters through higher sales taxes and local fees.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">At the same time, Gregory\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2026\/03\/13\/florida-special-election-palm-beach-00826611\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer nofollow\">signaled openness<\/a>\u00a0to more targeted relief, such as exemptions for first-time homebuyers.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Gregory criticized the GOP-led Legislature\u2019s focus on curbing diversity, equity and inclusion programs, arguing that such efforts eschew more pressing economic challenges facing residents.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Her campaign\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/dos.elections.myflorida.com\/candidates\/CanDetail.asp?account=89197\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer nofollow\">reported raising<\/a>\u00a0about $176,000 directly, supplemented by roughly $82,000 in in-kind support. Jon fought valiantly in the face of low Republican turnout due to awkward Special Election timing, and despicable, dark-money racial attacks from Democrat criminal defense lawyers pretending to be Republicans. Through mid-February, he raised $290,000 in outside contributions, which he added to $14,000 in self-loans through his\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/dos.elections.myflorida.com\/candidates\/CanDetail.asp?account=89147\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer nofollow\">campaign account<\/a>\u00a0and political committee,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/dos.elections.myflorida.com\/committees\/ComDetail.asp?account=89143\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer nofollow\">Friends of Jon Maples<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">His haul grew further to $440,000, he told\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2026\/03\/13\/florida-special-election-palm-beach-00826611\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer nofollow\">POLITICO<\/a>, which reported that Maples\u2019 spending on digital and TV ads had nearly topped $100,000 in the election\u2019s home stretch.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Maples\u2019 campaign also benefited from significant outside support, including roughly $184,000 in in-kind assistance from the Florida House Republican Campaign Committee (<a href=\"https:\/\/fhrcc.com\/\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer nofollow\">FHRCC<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">His endorsement list reflects that backing. Trump, Attorney General\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/floridapolitics.com\/archives\/774906-ready-to-lead-james-uthmeier-endorses-jon-maples-for-hd-87\/\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">James Uthmeier<\/a>\u00a0and a slew of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/floridapolitics.com\/archives\/753424-jon-maples-notches-key-endorsement-from-maga-meg-weinberger-in-hd-87-bid\/\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">GOP state lawmakers<\/a>\u00a0that includes Florida Speaker-designate\u00a0Sam Garrison\u00a0and state Reps.\u00a0Anne Gerwig,\u00a0Jon Snyder\u00a0and \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/floridapolitics.com\/archives\/753424-jon-maples-notches-key-endorsement-from-maga-meg-weinberger-in-hd-87-bid\/\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">MAGA<\/a>\u201d\u00a0Meg Weinberger\u00a0are backing Maples, as are Lake Worth Beach Commissioner\u00a0Mimi May\u00a0and former state Rep.\u00a0MaryLynn Magar.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Questions arose in recent weeks regarding his residency, with\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/stetnews.org\/2026\/03\/15\/state-house-seat-at-stake-its-gregory-vs-maples\/\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer nofollow\">reporting this month<\/a>\u00a0noting his listed home sat outside HD 87 and that he\u2019d registered to vote at an in-district apartment in January.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">He has since said he and his family <a href=\"https:\/\/cbs12.com\/news\/local\/florida-vote-democracy-politics-news-republican-john-maples-addresses-residency-questions-campaign-priorities-in-district-87-race-campaign-trail-candidate-hypoluxo-lantana-manalapan-south-palm-beach-lake-worth-beach-palm-beach-west-palm-beach\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer nofollow\">bought and moved into<\/a>\u00a0a new home in Jupiter within the district\u2019s bounds.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Under\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/soe.dos.state.fl.us\/pdf\/DE%20Guide%200008%20-%20Guidelines%20for%20Determining%20When%20Residency%20Qualifications....pdf\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer nofollow\">Florida law<\/a>, candidates must only live in the district they seek to represent by the time they are sworn in \u2014 which, in this case, is expected between April 1 and April 4.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Gregory\u2019s campaign <a href=\"https:\/\/floridapolitics.com\/archives\/786302-group-tied-to-emily-gregory-sends-race-baiting-text-dems-should-condemn-it\/\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">drew criticism<\/a> last week for a political text attacking Maples that some argued featured racially charged imagery and misleading claims about his residency and voting record.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The message was linked to a political committee with ties to Gregory\u2019s campaign vendor, raising questions about coordination.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Democrats characterized the HD 87 race as a \u201crare flip opportunity,\u201d even as Republicans continue to hold a significant statewide registration advantage \u2014 a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/dos.fl.gov\/elections\/data-statistics\/voter-registration-statistics\/voter-registration-reports\/voter-registration-by-party-affiliation\/\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer nofollow\">1.48 million-voter edge<\/a>\u00a0statewide as of last month.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Across Palm Beach County, Democrats have a narrow but shrinking voter lead of about 13,000.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Florida Democratic Party Chair\u00a0Nikki Fried said the win would power the party into the Midterms.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cI\u2019m thrilled to congratulate Representative-Elect Emily Gregory on this monumental victory.
