Det oppst\u00e5r i den \u00f8vre polare atmosf\u00e6ren, mellom 80 kilometer og sjelden over 500 kilometer over jordoverflaten, n\u00e5r elektroner og protoner kolliderer med atmosf\u00e6regassen. Denne gassen blir tilf\u00f8rt energi som s\u00e5 sendes ut igjen i form av lys. Selve lysutsendelsen kommer hovedsakelig fra atomer og molekyler i atmosf\u00e6ren og ikke fra selve prim\u00e6rpartiklene.<\/li>\n<li>Nordlyset opptrer i mange forskjellige former. Fargene i nordlyset er et linjespektrum som dekker hele omr\u00e5det fra ultrafiolett til infrar\u00f8dt. Hvilke farger en forekomst av nordlys best\u00e5r av, blir bestemt av energiniv\u00e5et i partiklene og sammensetningen av atmosf\u00e6regassen. De dominerende fargene i den delen av fargespekteret vi kan se, er gr\u00f8nt, r\u00f8dt og bl\u00e5tt. Forekomst og intensitet av nordlyset er p\u00e5 sin side styrt av aktivitet p\u00e5 sola. Jordas magnetfelt og atmosf\u00e6re bestemmer hvor p\u00e5 jorda nordlyset opptrer.<\/li>\n<li>Det latinske navnet p\u00e5 nordlys er aurora borealis. Men denne r\u00f8dfargen er ikke ofte jeg har sett. Fantastisk fint fargespill fra naturen dette, beskriver han i en sms til NA tirsdag kveld.<\/p>\n<p>Nordlyset er et syn som tar pusten fra en, og som f\u00e5r selv den mest hardbarkede observat\u00f8r til \u00e5 stoppe opp i stillhet.<\/p>\n<p>Intensiteten av nordlyset m\u00e5les p\u00e5 en skala som heter KP-indeks.
