The old guard of the Democratic Party suffered another body blow when three socialist congressional candidates in New York with anti-Israel platforms swept to victory, lurching the party even further to the left.

All the candidates were backed by New York City’s socialist mayor, Zohran Mamdani, who is a protégé of Boston Mayor Michelle Wu and the new kingmaker in the party.

The victories by the socialists means Massachusetts’ liberal Democrats like U.S. Rep. Ayanna Pressley are also sure to move toward more extremist positions.

Two Democratic incumbents, including U.S. Rep. Dan Goldman, were ousted in the New York City congressional primaries – putting other entrenched incumbents on notice that the insurgent extreme left wing is coming for their jobs. No one is safe any more.

The victorious candidates in New York City, Brad Lander, Claire Valdez and Darializa Avila Chevalier, were all pro-Palestinian and outspoken critics of Israel, a bad sign for the rise in antisemitic attacks in this country.

“Today, we make it clear – the politics of the past ends today,” Avila Chevalier said in her victory party, where supporters chanted “Free Palestine.”

Lander, who ousted Goldman, had accused the incumbent congressman of not being critical enough of Israel. Valdez, whose seat goes from Brooklyn to Queens, accused her opponent inaccurately of getting pro-Israel donations.

Lander, Valdez and Avila Chevalier will all coast to victory in November in the heavily-Democratic districts. President Trump reacted by predicting New York will “only get worse” because of their triumphs in the heavily-blue state.

“Many communists running in badly failing Blue States,” Trump wrote on Truth Social. “America the Beautiful will NEVER be a Communist Country!!!”

Mamdani has been accused of making antisemitic remarks and is also an advocate for the Palestinian cause. He called pro-Israel groups “monsters” at a rally for his candidates last week.

Younger, more far left candidates across the nation, from California to Indiana, are running this year to try and oust older, longtime congressional incumbents — angering Democratic Party leaders.

In Massachusetts, U.S. Rep. Stephen Lynch, a longtime Democratic moderate, is facing left wing challenger Patrick Roath in the Sept. 1 primary. The results in New York City are bad news for incumbents like Lynch and could portend an upset here.

Wu, a socialist in all but name, is also trying to flex her muscle, backing several state legislative challengers in the hopes of knocking off her enemies, state Sens. William Brownsberger and Nick Collins.

Wu is hoping that an anti-incumbent far left wave takes out Brownsberger and Collins, who both worked to block the Boston mayor’s commercial tax hike proposal.

Wu and Mamdani are closely aligned, and Mamdani has said he sees Wu as a role model mayor.

The results in New York affirm that socialists are on the rise and likely will field a presidential candidate in 2028.
