House Speaker Mike Johnson on Friday tried to issue a warning about what’s at stake if Democrats win control of Congress in the November midterms—an outcome that at this point is more likely than not.
But his warning was inadvertently a great case for why voters should hand Democrats the reins.
“If we were to lose the midterms, heaven forbid, … y’all, impeachment’s not even the biggest concern,” Johnson said Friday at the right-wing Faith & Freedom Coalition’s annual Road to Majority Conference. “They will turn every committee of Congress into an investigative body, and they’ll go after the president’s family, the Cabinet, his donors and friends—half of you in this room will be targeted.”
Johnson: If we lose the midterms, these Democrats will turn every committee of Congress into an investigative body, and they’ll go after the president’s family, the cabinet, his donors, friends, half of you in this room will be targeted. I run the protection program. We’ll take care of you.

Don’t threaten us with a good time, Mike.
In all honesty, this is an affirmative argument for voters to choose Democrats this fall.
Majorities of voters—including many in Trump’s MAGA base—want accountability for Trump and his wealthy friends over their ties to now-deceased sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. Voters feel Trump has been hiding evidence of Epstein’s crimes. And Republicans are helping him, undertaking a bullshit investigation that makes it look like they’re doing something when, in actuality, they are just running cover for their Dear Leader.
Americans also are unsupportive of Trump’s construction projects across the nation’s capital, including the White House ballroom and the unsightly gigantic arch he wants that will obscure views from Arlington National Cemetery. And so they would likely support probes into how much these ridiculous projects are costing taxpayers, which Democrats are vowing to conduct if they are given control of Congress.
Investigations into Trump’s unpopular Cabinet officials are also likely to be popular, as they have so far evaded accountability for their bad behavior and destructive actions.
Indeed, Democrats were already capitalizing on Johnson’s comment.
“Good point,” Democratic strategist Dan Pfeiffer wrote in a post on X, regarding Johnson’s remark. “If you think politicians, billionaires, elites, and members of the Epstein Class should be able to do whatever they want without any accountability, vote Republican this Fall.”
We’ll get straight to the point: The financial hardships that Daily Kos is facing this year are tough.
We continue to be paywall-free. We continue to be supported by our readers, not billionaires or corporations. But we need to bring in more revenue. We are leaning on our community more than ever to help make ends meet.
Power matters.
