Week Ahead in Washington for August 23

  • 2026-08-23

WASHINGTON (Gray DC) – Congress remains on recess this week, but Trump administration officials are traveling across the U.S. as part of an effort to build momentum ahead of the midterms.

Vice President JD Vance will travel to Brewer, Maine, on Monday to speak at a defense technology manufacturer. It will be his second trip to the state in recent months.

Also on Monday, Secretary of War Pete Hegseth will travel to Nebraska and Wisconsin as part of his “Arsenal of Freedom” tour. The tour is aimed at energizing the defense industrial base. Hegseth is also scheduled to stop at Strategic Command headquarters outside Omaha.

Meanwhile, President Donald Trump is scheduled to travel to Houston on Friday. He will stop at NASA’s Lyndon B. Johnson Space Center to present the Space Medal of Honor to the Artemis II crew.

Friday also marks the 63rd anniversary of Martin Luther King Jr.’s March on Washington. To mark the day, the Reverend Al Sharpton’s National Action Network is scheduled to rally on the National Mall for voting rights.

The rally comes months after a Supreme Court decision targeted the Voting Rights Act, giving states more room to redraw congressional districts that weaken minority voices.
