President Trump orders flags lowered across U.S. in memory of Dolly Parton
WASHINGTON —
Country music icon Dolly Parton has died. She was 80.
The 10-time Grammy-winning country singer, songwriter, actress and philanthropist known as the “Queen of Country,” died peacefully Tuesday in Nashville, Tennessee, her publicist said in a statement.
Her death has prompted widespread reaction from notable figures across the music, film and television industries, among others.
President Donald Trump was among those who issued a statement in wake of her death, ordering flags to be lowered across the country.
“Very sad to report that Dolly Parton, one of the greatest Country singers, and far beyond, EVER, has just passed away. This is a true loss for millions of people. There has never been anyone like her, and never will. In her honor, I am lowering the American flag throughout the United States for a one week period beginning tonight at 6:00PM. Rest in Peace, Dolly! The World loves you. President DONALD J. TRUMP,” the president wrote on Truth Social.
Parton was among the most beloved personalities in music and beyond — the rare celebrity whose appeal transcended generations, geography and politics.
She wrote hundreds of songs, including classics like “Jolene,” “Coat of Many Colors” and “I Will Always Love You,” that totaled more than 100 million worldwide sales and more than 1 billion online streams.
