A message about national unity quickly turned into a political jab for JD Vance. While discussing plans for the 25th anniversary of 9/11, the vice president first looked back on the solidarity Americans showed after the attacks and then used the moment to take a sarcastic swing at Joe Biden.

The remarks came Thursday during a White House press briefing, where Vance confirmed he plans to attend the anniversary gathering in New York. President Donald Trump will not represent the administration at the ceremony, reportedly because organizers will not allow speeches. Former presidents Barack Obama, George W. Bush and Bill Clinton are also expected at Ground Zero (via The HuffPost).
Vance initially framed the anniversary as an opportunity to recover some of the unity that followed the attacks. He pointed to the “commonality and common purpose” Americans shared on Sept. 11 and argued that the country should try to reclaim that spirit in everyday life.
Vance then turned his attention to Biden and joked that he was “really looking forward to hanging out with Joe Biden.” He followed that with a sarcastic prediction about having “many, many intense intellectual conversations” before finishing with, “We’ll have a great time.”
The contrast did not land well with many people online. Critics considered the timing especially poor because Biden received a Stage IV prostate cancer diagnosis last year. One social media user called the vice president’s comments “petty” and accused him of turning a day of collective mourning into a personal attack.
Other reactions took an even sharper tone. One critic questioned whether Vance viewed the memorial gathering “as some party,” while another said mocking a former president at the location of America’s deadliest terrorist attack revealed exactly how little seriousness Vance brought to the occasion.
Some users also targeted Vance’s attempt at humor itself. One post argued that his effort at “Dark Humor” repeatedly falls flat because he undermines his own punchlines. Another dismissed his presentation as an attempt to appear cool that instead came across as “pathetic.”
