DORCHESTER COUNTY, S.C. (WCSC) — California Gov. Gavin Newsom was in Dorchester County on Thursday.
It was the third stop on his tour of the state. He had three more public events the next day.
Officially, he was here at the invitation of the state Democratic Party.
The South Carolina Democratic Party has a speaker series called “On The Road to Flip the Future.” The goal is to rally Democrats ahead of the November election. Former Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg, Maryland Gov. Wes Moore, Arizona Sen. Ruben Gallego and Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear have all made pilgrimages to the Palmetto State.
The invitation is the official reason. The less official, but probably more obvious, reason is much more presidential. South Carolina is the first state in the nation to hold its Democratic primary, set for January 22, 2028.
Newsom, Beshear and Buttigieg are all names currently circulating in the presidential conversation — a conversation that is being held in South Carolina with South Carolina voters.
