Indiana Fever reserve guard Sophie Cunningham reignited a national debate around the participation of transgender athletes in women’s sports with her comments on the controversial topic in a July ESPN profile.
“I got a lot of negative feedback about me hating trans. And I’m like, ‘I never once said that,'” she told the Worldwide Leader. “I think that I am here to extend love. But I also think with that love is truth, being honest. And I want to protect young girls in a locker room, or young girls in sport who shouldn’t have to go against biological men.”
The comments even garnered a response from U.S. President Donald Trump’s administration.
“I don’t believe he (President Trump) has reached out to her. I know he is following the story. As you know, this is something the president feels strongly about as well, and the American people do, too: that men should not be playing in women’s sports,” former White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said.
“It’s completely ludicrous that anyone could support that. It’s even more ludicrous you have Sophie Cunningham, a female athlete herself, very accomplished in her own right, coming forth and speaking that truth that men shouldn’t play in women’s sports — we want to protect women and girls — and the backlash she is receiving from Democrats and left-wing fingers across the country is astonishing. They are clearly very out of touch with the American public on this issue.”
The President isn’t the only one who has strong feelings on where gender identity fits in our society. According to the BBC, Tech billionaire Elon Musk “has said he ‘supports trans’ while expressing impatience with pronouns – calling them an ‘aesthetic nightmare.'”
Ironically, one of Musk’s children, daughter Vivian Wilson, is transgender. Wilson filed to cut ties with her father in 2022, saying she no longer wished to “be related to my biological father in any way, shape or form.”
Wilson recently mocked Musk and his Tesla bots in Desigual’s “Born to Disobey” campaign, in which she also scratched “born to disobey” into a Tesla car.
“Many of us, including myself, end up having most of our typical teenage experiences in early adulthood,” Wilson said.
“I think there’s a specific beauty in that. Fashion has helped me figure out who I am, and made me more confident in my aesthetic and how I’m facing the world. To be honest, the people I met in fashion have likely had more of an impact on me than fashion itself. You are not alone. Find queer community however you can will always be my advice. Just be careful, safety should always be your priority.”
Regardless of what Cunningham, Trump, Musk, or anyone else who uses their platform to advocate against transgender people participating in any aspect of society may feel, transgender people belong, and they aren’t going anywhere.
