GREENSBORO, N.C. — Vice President JD Vance campaigned for Republican U.S. Senate candidate Michael Whatley at a rally in Greensboro, making the case that Whatley can help the Trump administration continue its agenda.
Roughly 300 people attended the rally.
“I want to go to Washington, D.C. and fight every single day for a strong America, for a strong economy, for a strong border and safe communities, and for the strongest army, navy, air force, and Marines and Coast Guard that we have ever had,” U.S. Senate candidate, Michael Whatley said.
Whatley faces former Gov. Roy Cooper for the Senate seat currently held by Republican Sen. Thom Tillis.
Vance said Republicans need Whatley in the Senate to help the Trump administration advance its agenda.
“But we can’t get it done. We can’t keep growing our economy. We can’t secure the border. We can’t support American workers and families unless we’ve got allies in Congress,” Vance said.
Vance also spent much of his speech criticizing Cooper’s record as governor.
“For eight years, Governor Roy Cooper had left wing activists in his ear screaming at him to do their bidding,” Vance said.
Vance pointed to Cooper’s record on elections, crime and other policies, saying Cooper failed North Carolinians.
“On decision after decision, Roy Cooper has made choices that put the public safety and put the citizens of this state at risk,” Vance said.
What the latest poll shows
The latest Elon University Poll, conducted Aug. 21-31, found Cooper leading Whatley 49% to 38% among likely voters. The poll also found 54% of registered voters disapprove of President Donald Trump’s job performance, while 31% approve.
Vance had a message for voters who are still deciding.
“If you’re unhappy with the pace of progress, don’t hand power back to Democrats who drove our country to the ground in the first place,” Vance said.
Whatley and Cooper are campaigning ahead of the November election.
